Antonio Escamilla, 19, was arrested Monday following an east Orange County car crash that left his passenger, a teenage girl, dead.
The two cars involved in the wreck, both Honda Civics, collided at the intersection of Santiago Canyon Road and Silverado Canyon Road, about 25 miles southeast of Anaheim.
“The first (driver) slowed down, stated he saw an animal in the roadway,” CHP Officer Todd Kovaletz told KNBC-TV in Los Angeles. “That caused the second car, following pretty closely, to brake hard and turn off the road to the left.”
The victim, 16-year-old Marie Johnson, was ejected from her vehicle. She was pronounced dead on the scene.
As of Monday afternoon, the driver of the other vehicle had not been cited, according to media reports.
Escamilla was apparently booked on suspicion of felony gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.
If convicted, he faces up to 10 years in prison.
