Protester arrested again

SANTA ROSA – Jose Luis Godoy is without a doubt a polarizing figure. He became well known to people and the media involved in the case of Andy Lopez, the 13-year-old boy who was shot to death by a sheriff’s deputy when he was seen with what turned out to be a replica firearm in Santa Rosa. The shooting gained national noteriety and spurred multiple protest movements, events, marches, news stories, and protest/tribute pages on Facebook. Jose Luis “Louie” Godoy became known for being a loud voice at some of those events, and for getting arrested multiple times in clashes with law enforcement.

A fundraising page has been set up to support Godoy and provide financial support to his legal defense. The page reads “Louie Godoy is a leader of Andy’s Youth and the protest movement demanding Justice for Andy Lopez. To silence his voice, law enforcement have piled charges on him. HELP US KEEP HIM FREE!” The site reports raising $425.00 of a stated goal of $2000.00.

The problem is that Godoy has also been known to commit crimes that make him look like a common street thug. He was reportedly convicted of child endangerment in 2012, followed by arrests during the protests of suspected brandishing of a weapon (he claimed was a staple gun) and acts of vandalism. His supporters looked on him as a passionate leader who was being unfairly targeted by law enforcement. Others in the movement saw him as at best a distraction, and at worst a thug giving the cause a bad name and hurting the message of justice for Andy Lopez.

Godoy is arrested at one of the protests.

Godoy is arrested at one of the protests.

With all that as a background, Godoy was arrested for a January 16 burglary at a home improvement store. Godoy was identified as one of five people leaving the store with a blowtorch. When he was spotted the next week, and officers tried to contact him for questioning, he tried to turn the incident into one more media circus, as if he was being harassed for the Lopez movement incidents. He was arrested that day, January 24, for the probation violation and interfering with the investigation.

Godoy’s name surfaced once again this week under less than noble circumstances. According to a press release, during the day Thursday, April 24, the Santa Rosa Police received a report of a suspicious vehicle on West 8th Street with people who appeared to be using drugs. Officers responding found the car, which was filled with two men and 4 minors, as well as clouds of marijuana smoke. They detained the six occupants and inspected the car, finding marijuana, concentrated cannabis, or hash oil, and smoking paraphernalia.

They arrested the two men, who turned out to be none other than Jose Luis Godoy, 24, and another Santa Rosa man, 19-year-old Guillermo Ortiz. Godoy was booked into Sonoma County Jail on charges of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and probation violations. Ortiz was cited and released to appear later on charges of possession of concentrated cannabis. The four children were released to either their parents of their schools.

ONTARIO – A man died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, ending a SWAT team standoff on Sunday night.

He was discovered by SWAT team robot, which ended a six-hour standoff.

Ontario police evacuated neighbors from nearby residences when a 30-year-old unidentified man, reportedly using methamphetamine, fired a single gunshot. Thirty seconds later, said an Ontario Police spokesman, another gunshot went off inside the home.

A woman and child were inside the home at the 2900 block of East Dunlin Way, which is about two blocks from the Ontario Police Department.

Officers saw the man in a window, then heard a gunshot from inside the home. Sgt. Jeff Higbee, the police spokesman, said another gunshot followed.

The ordeal began shortly after 3 p.m. Higbee said police received a call from the home which ended with a hang-up. When officers responded, speaking with a woman and child at the front door, they were evacuated.

Unable to negotiate a peaceful surrender through family members, police were unable to communicate with the suspect by phone or loudspeaker. By 8:35 p.m., a SWAT team member launched a tear gas capsule into the home. One hour later, the SWAT robot entered the residence. It was determined the suspect had died by a self-inflicted gunshot. A shotgun was found nearby.

The crime scene included two incident command trucks, armored vehicles along with marked and unmarked police cars.

During the ordeal, officers evacuated neighbors from their homes by pulling them out of windows in order to keep them out of firing range from the barricaded home.

Ventura County - The City of Camarillo was set on a razor’s edge of anxiety on the afternoon of March 31, 2014, when a woman doing her grocery shopping at the Camarillo Mission Oaks Shopping Center Vons was suddenly assaulted by another store patron.

According to Ventura County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Sgt. Pete O’Sullivan, the female victim was “sexually battered” by a man described shortly thereafter as “a white male, approximately 55-65 years of age, medium build, gray hair, and a bushy grey mustache.”  The suspect was further identified to law enforcement during their investigation as wearing specific clothing that included “a white baseball cap.”

Using aggressive media outreach systems, the VCSD promptly issued a press release with a security camera photo image attached of the suspect, appealing to the public for any help in identifying what was clearly a dangerous individual roaming the streets of this otherwise tranquil community.  Shortly thereafter, O’Sullivan reported, information began flowing into detectives working the case, leading them to identify Carlos “Rico” Arturo Rodriguez, age 74.

The fact that Rodriguez is Hispanic, nearly a decade older than described by witnesses, and is bald did not dissuade law enforcement, as eyewitness descriptions have long been proved to be notoriously inaccurate and undependable in criminal trials.

Over the next three weeks detectives sought the whereabouts of Rodriguez, and obtained an arrest warrant for Sexual Battery and Elder or Dependent Adult Abuse from the Ventura Superior Court.

On April 25th, detectives ascertained the whereabouts of Rodriguez and contacted him at a residence on Caleta Drive in the City of Camarillo, where he was arrested and transported to Ventura County Jail.  He was booked on the aforementioned charges with his bail set at $20,000.

Additional information regarding the activities of Rodriguez is currently sought by VCSD, and those with such information are urged to contact Det. T.J. DeSalvo at (805) 388-5157.

El Dorado County—El Dorado County detectives arrested Glenn O’Rourke of Placerville on April 28, 2014 in a sexual predator case.

On Monday April 14, 2014, a 15-year-old boy reported to the Sheriff’s Office that he had received sexually suggestive and descriptive text messages from an unknown 26-year-old male, who identified himself as “Glenn Coco.” The text messages described the man’s sexual desires for the boy and also included homemade pornographic videos of himself performing sexual acts and numerous suggestive photographs. O’Rourke had initiated casual conversations with the boy several months earlier in an attempt to groom the boy into becoming his partner for sexual pleasure.

El Dorado County detectives immediately began investigating the case against this sexual predator, who was targeting an unsuspecting youth in the community. An arrest warrant was requested for O’Rourke through the District Attorney’s Office. With the assistance of the 15-year-old boy, detectives contacted O’Rourke using the boy’s cellular telephone and impersonated the boy. A meeting date and location was quickly established but O’Rourke never made it to the meeting location. Detectives were in place and arrested O’Rourke without incident. He was later booked into the county jail and his bail is $250,000.

Detectives do not believe the boy in this case is O’Rourke’s only victim. Anyone with information regarding O’Rourke (aka Coco) is asked to call Detective Rich Horn at (530) 642-4715.

Ventura County - Newbury Park resident Robert Garza, 37, who has served as a “walk on” coach at Westlake High School for the girls’ softball team and the boys’ Junior Varsity basketball team was identified by Ventura County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Capt. Mike Hartmann as the primary suspect in a sexual assault allegation made to law enforcement, and was arrested and arraigned on those charges on April 24th.

According to Hartmann, the Thousand Oaks Police Department received a call that Garza—one of many “walk on” coaches working in the Conejo Valley Unified School District and remunerated for his efforts out of school funds in spite of not holding a faculty position—had been engaging in sexual contact with a 15 year-old female athlete during the recent Spring Break from classes.

The ensuing investigation included numerous faculty and student interviews, and led to Garza’s apprehension and transport to Venture County Jail where he was booked on a variety of sexual assault charges involving a minor, with his bail set at $100,000.

While the alleged crimes were reported to have occurred off-campus and outside of school schedules, School District Superintendent Jeffrey Baarstad is “cooperating fully with the police investigation,” Hartmann reported.  For his part, Baarstad commented to various media outlets that “We’re very, very disturbed by the allegations and once we understand what has happened we’re going to make sure we take appropriate actions.”

Hartman indicated that the East Ventura County Major Crimes Sexual Assault Unit is appealing to the public to report any knowledge of Garza and his activities as well as any potential unreported victims as they may relate to the current charges by calling (805) 947-8108.

Ventura County - In an unusually aggressive effort to locate the perpetrator of what can only be described as a broad daylight “nightmare right out of the movies” crime, the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office has broadcast a media outreach appeal in an attempt to locate two men who allegedly raped a 25 year-old Moorpark woman when she interrupted a burglary in progress.

According to VCSD spokesman Det. Tim Lanquist, the Elderberry Avenue resident returned to her home just before noon on April 16th, only to discover two men actively burglarizing the place and removing her possessions.  While details of what immediately ensued were not made public, Lanquist did report that “the victim reported that she was sexually assaulted after being confronted by the two suspects.”  Both suspects, white males between 25 and 35 years of age, then left the residence and “were last seen running north.”

The female victim—who was treated by paramedics for minor injuries—gave detailed descriptions of her assailants, one of which enabled East County Major Crimes Sexual Assault Unit and Moorpark Detectives to provide a sketch of one assailant referred to as “Suspect #2” for public distribution, along with a description indicating that he stands 5-10 to 6-2, “wearing all black clothing, with a dark-colored beanie.”  The other suspect, described as standing 6-2 to 6-4, was reported to have been similarly attired.

The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office is eager to hear from anyone who may have knowledge of this crime, possible suspects, or similar assaults, and urges them to contact Det. Lanquist at (805) 494-8229.

Former Police Commander Gets Three Years

SALINAS—Monterey County District Attorney Dean D. Fippo announced that 51-year-old John Nyunt of Pacific Grove pled guilty to charges from a yearlong investigation.  He pled guilty to one count of dissuading a person from reporting a crime by threat of violence and one count of being an accessory after the fact.  Mr. Nyunt will serve a three-year prison sentence.

The Investigation revealed that John Nyunt, Former Commander of the Pacific Grove Police Department, knew that his wife was committing identity theft.   Armed with this knowledge he ordered subordinates in the Pacific Grove Police Department to close investigations in which she was a prime suspect.

He also lied to victims by telling them that investigations were still on going, in order to protect his wife.  He also provided his wife access to secured police emails and an online police database.  His wife used that database to gather sensitive information and use it to commit identity theft.  Her victims include other police officers and citizens throughout the state and country. She even defrauded John’s son and his ex-wife.

The Nyunt’s also started an unlicensed private investigation business, which was a violation of Pacific Grove Police Department policy.  He would refer people seeking police assistance to his private business.  This was a violation of federal law.   Furthermore, the people that hired the Nyunts became victims from her alleged use of their information to commit identify fraud.

John Nyunt used his position as a police commander to cover up these crimes.  The investigation also revealed that he embezzled police property for his own use.  When his wife threatened to reveal what they had done to the district attorney’s office and his involvement, he phoned her and threatened to slit her throat during the conversation.

During his rant that was taped by his wife you can hear Nyunt proclaim that “he threatened to take an assault weapon and kill several District Attorney investigators” and then “yeah, I’m going to start killin my people first.”  He went on to predict that he was going to make “national news”.

John Nyunt was sentenced to three-years in state prison. The case is not over yet, as United States Attorney Melinda Haag will also file federal charges that include extortion.

Felon Caught with Guns

Santa Barbara County - Presumably working on the theory that “once a bad apple, always a bad apple”, one way in which the California Legislature has attempted to protect its law-abiding citizenry was to put laws on the books preventing convicted felons from possessing firearms and/or ammunition

Those Criminal Codes are well known to all convicted felons, and their enforcement is generally one of the stronger elements of post-release behavior under terms of felony parole.  But Marc Steele, 62, himself a felon now enjoying the perquisites of life “on the outside”, apparently either missed that parolee counseling session or didn’t believe that the prohibition against possessing firearms and ammo actually applied to him.

Guns seized from Steele

Guns seized from Steele

Evidence of that, according to Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department Public Information Officer Kelly Hoover, came four hours past midnight on April 22nd when SBSD deputies responded to a 911 Emergency call from a woman reporting that she “was being threatened by a male subject with a shotgun.”

Responding deputies discovered Steele alone in his residence, with no sign of the reporting female.  Steele, who is “known to law enforcement”, informed Deputies that he had gotten into an argument with a female “escort” and her male companion over the cost of the “escort” services to be provided.  While he denied ever threatening anyone with a gun that night, he did admit to having a shotgun in the nearby garage, which then made the Deputies’ decision an easy one.  Steele was arrested for being a felon in possession of a firearm, and was booked into Santa Barbara County Jail on those charges.

The following afternoon, with a warrant for the search of Steele’s house in hand, Deputies returned to the residence and discovered four additional firearms, 500 rounds of ammunition, and “a small amount of suspected methamphetamine.”

Steele’s bail was set at $80,000, while SBSD detectives seek any information leading to the identity and whereabouts of Steele’s “escort” and her male companion.

Rocklin Man Arrested, Suspected of Videotaping Women with Hidden Cameras

The Placer County Sheriff’s Office have reportedly arrested a Rocklin resident suspected of illegally videotaping women in public and in his home while they were in the bathroom, as well as for having child pornography, according to an official press release.

Peter Terrance Nelson, 41, of Rocklin, was reportedly arrested at his home on Monday, April 28, 2014, for possession of child pornography. He is reportedly in custody at the Placer County Jail and bail was set at $1 million.

According to Placer County Sheriff, the Roseville Police Department reportedly began investigating Nelson in October 2013, which later led to his arrest for videotaping under women’s dresses in a local Costco. That led Sheriff’s detectives to conduct a search of Nelson’s residence on April 15, 2014, during which two computers were seized. After a forensic evaluation of the computers, it was reportedly determined that Nelson had hidden cameras in his residence and had filmed numerous women showering and using the bathroom.

Detectives are reportedly attempting to identify all the women in the videos, which date back to 2007. The videos are reportedly from Nelson’s residences in Elk Grove and Rocklin. Detectives reportedly also believe Nelson placed cameras in a bathroom at his former place of employment and in portable bathrooms at sporting events.

Sheriff’s detectives are asking anyone who was a guest at Nelson’s residences in Elk Grove or Rocklin between 2007 and now to contact Detective Hudson at 530-889-7800.
