BAKERSFIELD —A man who led deputies on a wild car chase through the streets of Bakersfield on Monday evening,  is behind bars after crashing his vehicle into a tree.

Jamie Gomez, 23, of Arvin, was booked into the Kern County Jail Central Receiving Facility for carjacking, kidnapping, criminal threats, felony evading, felon in possession of a firearm, felon in possession of ammunition and resisting arrest. Gomez, who also had an outstanding post supervised release warrant, is being held without bail.

According to the Kern County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began when deputies responded to a carjacking and kidnapping with a firearm that occurred in the 6900 block of Niles Street at around 6 p.m. on Feb. 17.

“While talking to the victim, officers from the California Highway Patrol were able to spot the suspect vehicle in the area of Eucalyptus and Pioneer Drives,” said Ray Pruitt, public information officer for KCSO. “However, when the officers tried to stop the vehicle, it sped off toward the City of Arvin.”

Officers said that the vehicle then turned back toward Bakersfield, where deputies took over the pursuit, which according to authorities reached speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour. After running several stop signs and stop lights, the pursuit ended when Gomez lost control of the vehicle he was driving and ran into an orange tree in the area of Breckenridge Road and Edison Road. He then bolted from the vehicle, and was later spotted by the sheriff’s helicopter, hiding in an orange tree.

“The suspect resisted arrest, but was eventually taken into custody with the help of a canine unit,” Pruitt said.

Gomez received minor injuries and was treated and released from Kern Medical Center.

Young man is impatient to be arrested

Yesterday afternoon at 2:50 pm, a young man walked into the Redding Police department. He arrived at the lobby and found a line of people at the reception window. Apparently frustrated by this, he hit a 49-year-old man with his fist, just about knocking him over. The victim did not know his assailant, and was apparently a random choice, or just the last one in line.

The young man, later identified as Branson Matthew Level, 22 of Redding, followed his attack by walking a few steps away and lying down on the floor. Officers rushed in and took him into custody, and the victim, who said he was “shaken” but otherwise uninjured, did request that battery charges be filed against Level.

Redding Police Station, where Level attacked a stranger

Redding Police Station, where Level attacked a stranger

In addition to that arrest, it became apparent that Level’s purpose there was to turn himself in – he had two outstanding felony warrants, and is a parolee on supervised early release. Level had been arrested on December 13 for possession of a controlled substance and a parole violation, and again on January 4 for vandalism and obstructing a police officer. His court date was scheduled for January 27, which is why he likely had a warrant out for his arrest due to missing that date.

It appears that Level may have once again been under the influence of something, because despite the fact that he came to the Police Station himself, he continued to be uncooperative with the officers, and gave no explanation for his attack on the man in line. He was booked for battery, resisting arrest, his two warrants, and parole violations.

Santa Barbara County - Nicholas McCloud, a 28 year-old with documented criminal gang affiliation, has learned that he simply doesn’t have the athletic ability to successfully evade pursuing members of the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department.

On the morning of February 11th, as reported by SBSD Public Information Officer Kelly Hoover, McCloud was being sought by law enforcement in connection with an ongoing gang and drug investigation.  As so often happens, keen-eyed members of the Sheriff’s Gang Enforcement Unit happened to visually observe pedestrian McCloud near his Orcutt residence.  When they endeavored to have a word with him, however, McCloud “took off running”, according to Hoover, “and a foot pursuit ensued.”

With Deputies on his heels, McCloud vaulted several backyard fences, making an apparently sincere attempt to avoid the contact sought by the Deputies.  It was during this pell-mell flight from those in uniform that McCloud found a bicycle in a residential backyard, and accelerated his flight from the law.

Deputies continued to pursue McCloud—although they didn’t have the benefit of mechanical transport and continued on foot—who led them past the Joe Nightingale Elementary School.  In an abundance of caution, other Sheriff’s Deputies immediately secured the grammar school campus with a temporary “lockdown” of all personnel and facilities.  Just ten minutes later, however, McCloud was spotted by his pursuers on a nearby front porch and promptly taken into custody.

Once the breathless suspect was in handcuffs, McCloud “was found to be in possession of a replica handgun and methamphetamine,” the latter perhaps explaining his irrationally manic attempt to outrun trained law enforcement officers.  McCloud was summarily transported to Santa Barbara County Jail where he was booked on charges of possession of a controlled substance, resisting arrest, and grand theft of a bicycle.

Police Pursue Child Pornographer to Three Residences

Bellflower, a community south of Los Angeles and east of Compton, was the stage for an investigation into child exploitation that eventually yielded a prodigious predator.  Investigators believed that child pornography had been uploaded onto a computer at a home in the Bellflower community.  This belief came from a tip from the National Center of Missing and Exploited Children.

Police obtained a warrant and searched the Bellflower residence, which in turn led them to a suspect in Bassett, about 10 miles north on 605.  They served another warrant for a residence in Bassett that resulted in a cache of evidence of possession, and possibly production, of child pornography.  It also appeared as if the occupant had left in a hurry.

This further evidence also uncovered the identification of two minor females, aged 10 – 13, from Los Angeles county who had been abused by the suspect – 43-year-old Manuel Montes.  He was arrested at a residence in Norwalk.  At that address they also found a “trophy room” which included clothes, toys and children’s books. He was charged with four counts of lewd acts upon a child, distributing child pornography and using a minor for sex acts.  His bail was set at $460,000.

46-year-old Lorenzo Montes, the suspect’s brother, was also arrested and charged with being an accessory after the fact

REDDING – Police arrested a familiar man yesterday, and this time it looks like he’s gone completely over the edge.

Ou Choy Saechao has been booked by Redding Police no less than four times in the past two months, beginning December 26, and continuing on January 2, January 24, and January 25. His fifth arrest came yesterday when his neighbors reported seeing him on the street wielding a hatchet and acting “bizarre.”

His previous arrests paint a picture of someone out to cause trouble. He was charged with trespassing, public intoxication, obstructing a public officer and an executive officer, taking a weapon from an officer, and re-taking goods from an officer. Though details of these incidents are not available, they paint a picture of someone getting drunk and belligerent, especially when confronted by authority figures.

Saechao made a scene in this neighborhood before being arrested.

Saechao made a scene in this neighborhood before being arrested.

When police were called yesterday to his Alta Mesa Drive neighborhood, they found Saechao armed with a hatchet as described. They tried to speak to him, but he ignored them and headed into the backyard. While trying to locate him, they saw him inside the house. According to a Redding Police press release, the officers attempted to calm him down and asked him to come outside and talk.

He naturally refused, and a woman in the house related to Saechao entered the living room where he was standing. He grabbed her from behind and held on to her as she struggled to break free from his grip. Now considering it to be a hostage situation, the officers formulated a plan of action.

As some of the police continued to try to speak with Saechao from the front porch, the others found a way in the house, and were able to subdue him, releasing the woman without harm to her.

The 28-year-old suspect was taken into custody, and was booked at the Shasta County Jail on charges of false imprisonment, kidnapping, and resisting arrest.

Shooter Convicted in Death of Three-Year-Old

SAN BERNARDINO – A gang member, accused of a 2011 shooting that took the life of a three-year-old girl, was convicted of the crime last week.

Authorities said this week that the sentence for Brandon Taray Barnes, 21, will be held on March 28. Barnes could face multiple life terms after a jury reached the conclusion, announced last Friday in San Bernardino County Superior Court. His conviction includes one count of murder and seven counts of attempted murder. Nylah Franco-Torrez was killed while a three-year-old cousin and her pregnant aunt injured during the shooting on Sept. 12, 2011.

Police said the confrontation began when Nylah’s uncle, Jerry Howie, witnessed Barnes beating a woman at a residence around the corner. The woman escaped the beating, said police, when Howie intervened.

About one hour later, while Howie and his family gathered on their front porch, with Nylah playing in the front yard, Barnes walked past the property and began shooting at the home in the 1300 block on North D Street. Howie’s three-year-old daughter, Justine, survived the shots, along with La-Donna Howie, who was five months pregnant. She was struck in the neck and jaw, but the fetus was not injured. Howie’s niece Nylah, however, was killed.

Three days later, police arrested Barnes, who did not testify during his trial, though his statements to police were played for the jury. He admitted firing the shots but told investigators he was trying to shoot over the house. The bullet strikes, meanwhile, were directly into the house, said reports.

Investigators determined that the shooting was not gang-related, but merely a reaction to Howie, who was not struck by any of the shots, for putting a stop to the earlier beating.

The shooting received a great deal of local and regional publicity, including plenty of attention on Los Angeles-area TV news stations.

Suspect had Five Pipe Bombs in a Lockbox

MOSS LANDING—The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office has arrested 40-year-old Campbell resident Erik Richard Snyder for possession of five pipe bombs and a firearm.

On Monday, February 17, Monterey County Sheriff’s Deputy S. Moran was patrolling a Moss Landing neighborhood in the early morning hours, when he noticed a recreational vehicle parked on a side of road.  Further investigation of the RV revealed to Deputy Moran that the RV was displaying license plate that belonged to a different vehicle.

Snyders RV was parked along Sandholdt Road. The power plant is seen on the left.

After a backup deputy arrived, they both contacted the owner of the RV, who was inside the vehicle.  The man advised the Deputies that the proper papers showing the vehicle’s proper registration were in a lockbox inside the vehicle. The Deputies retrieved the lockbox and opened it.  While searching the lockbox the Deputies found five improvised explosive devices – pipe bombs – along with a loaded revolver.

“The suspect, Erik Richard Snyder, is a convicted felon with an active restraining order.” Monterey County Sheriff’s Officials wrote, “Both these prohibit him from possessing a firearm.”

Snyder changed his Facebook profile on Dec. 28 last year, as perhaps a clue to his state of mind.

The Monterey County Sheriff’s Bomb Squad was called to the scene to evaluate the devices.  They determined that the devices were real.  The Bomb Squad rendered the devices safe shortly thereafter. After an extensive investigation, it was determined that the suspect’s proximity to the Moss Landing Power Plant was determined to be coincidental and without correlation.

Snyder was arrested for possession of the five pipe bombs and the firearm.  He was booked into the Monterey County Jail.

FRESNO – The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office arrested a man they believe is responsible for repeated burglaries at a U.S. Forest Service base in eastern Fresno County since the end of last year.

Stephen Bookwalter, 30, is suspected of being involved in the burglaries at the helitac base on Maxon Road near Trimmer Springs Road. The sheriff’s office says there are more suspects and there may be mores arrests in the case.

The first burglary happened in November of last year when more than $20,000 of property – including chainsaws, shop tools and equipment – was stolen from the base. Two days later, a television and assemblies from rifles worth more than $23,000 were stolen.

The suspects struck yet again in January of this year when they vandalized an employee’s vehicle at the base, stole another employee’s truck, and stole gasoline. Forest Service employees spotted the stolen truck two weeks ago parked at a home on the 12500 block of East Ashlan Avenue. When detectives later searched the home, they found several additional stolen items.

During the search, detectives also recovered stolen property – including three motorcycles, a shotgun, and a quad runner – from commercial burglaries on East Shields Avenue.

Bookwalter was arrested at the home on Ashlan Avenue and is being charged with commercial burglary, possession of stolen property, vehicle theft and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

According to Bakersfield Police, the incident began when Springston tried to steal a silver 2007 Mazda 6 from Smart Auto Dealership in the 200 block of Oak Street at about 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 19. Police said Springston held a victim at knife point before releasing them at a nearby park.

Several minutes later a 911-caller reported that a woman was possibly under the influence of alcohol and almost hit a vehicle on Highway 178. “At about 4:56 p.m., officers located the stolen vehicle traveling east on Highway 178,” said Michaela Beard, spokesperson for Bakersfield Police Department. “Officers attempted to stop the vehicle near Miramonte Road, but the driver failed to stop and led officers on a pursuit.” Springston then drove the stolen vehicle further east on Highway 178, when officers discontinued the pursuit as she entered Kern River Canyon.

A short time later, officers said they were flagged down by a pair of victims who said Springston tried to steal their vehicle. The attempt was unsuccessful and she fled in the Mazda.

Police then observed Springston traveling westbound on Highway 178, where she nearly struck a Bakersfield Police Department patrol vehicle and again failed to stop for officers. ”Officers then pursued Springston for approximately 20 minutes before her vehicle came to a stop on Highway 58 near Hart Flat Road,” Beard said. “She was then taken into custody.”

A Ceres couple has been arrested for selling fake Disneyland tickets on Craigslist.

Jessica Melendez, 33, and Israel Vasquez, 32, allegedly purchased real tickets from AAA, but then made photocopies and sold them online. The first user of the imprinted barcodes would have been admitted, but all subsequent copies were rejected as duplicates or previously used tickets.

Several people purchased the fakes and made the trek to southern California, only to be turned away at the Disneyland gate. Some of the families had enough money to pay for admission anyway, but others turned around and went home, said police.

After much anticipation, victims were either turned away or opened their wallets at Disneyland's main gate.

Brazen Cell Phone Burglar Captured After Freeway Chase

Information provided by observant witnesses led to the capture of a suspect in three separate cell phone burglaries.

About 12:40 pm on February 14, the suspect allegedly strolled into a busy cell phone store in central Vacaville. He approached a display case upon which late model cell phones were arrayed. Suddenly, one after the other, the thief tore nine expensive phones off security mounts. Then the suspect, Tremaine LeGrande Moore, 38, a resident of Antioch, walked out of the cell phone store, got in blue Dodge Charger and sped off.

Vacaville police officers arriving at the crime scene quickly recognized the similarity of the burglar’s unique modus operandi with witness descriptions of two recent burglaries in the area.

They initiated a search. An officer recognized Moore’s Charger on I-80. Pulling up behind, this officer recognized the alleged cell phone thief at the wheel. Witnesses had stated the suspect was six feet tall, 30 years old, about 200 pounds and African-American. The officer switched on his warning lights and siren. But Moore disobeyed these signals. Soon the chase exceeded 80mph and CHP officers joined in. Moore eventually stopped on Suisun Valley Road near Solano Community College.

When they caught up, police detained Moore and searched his Charger, discovering therein nine mobile phones valued at about $5,300. Each phone had had its security cable broken off.

Authorities praised witnesses who provided identification information crucial in nabbing Moore, who stole $10,000 worth of cell phones in burglaries that had occurred January 15 and February 12.

Vacaville Police Nab Prowler In Possession of Meth

After residents returning home at 10 am last Friday to their house on the 500 block of Buck Avenue in north central Vacaville observed a stranger in their back yard, they contacted police, and one suspect was arrested.

First there was short chase before officers contacted Ben Sapp, 19, at an apartment complex on nearby Monte Vista Avenue, police stated in a press release.

At first, Sapp tried to assume the identities of other persons via false documents, police said. But officers soon positively identified Sapp, connected him to the prowler sighting, and took him into custody. After his arrest, Sapp’s true identity was confirmed. Officers also found a small amount of methamphetamine in his pants pocket.

The California Highway Patrol also identified Sapp as one of several subjects who had run when its officers pulled a car over in Vacaville on February 13. Vacaville Police further stated in the press release that it was not clear what Sapp’s motives for prowling in the backyard of the Buck Avenue residence were, or whether he was connected to several previous burglaries in the area.

Sapp had also been arrested with three other men on January 9 in the area of Peabody Road and California Drive at Al Patch Park, for carrying a loaded firearm in public. His record also shows an arrest in July of last year when he and another young man were stopped by Fairfield police. He was charged at that time for possession of a controlled substance and committing a felony while out on bail.

‘High Risk Vehicle Stop’ ends shooting suspects rampage

SAN JOSE, Calif. – 29-year-old Isaiah Antwon Hill faces criminal charges of possession of a short barreled rifle/shotgun under PC 33210, in association with intimidating several suspected gang members at local San Jose Park. Hill has been scheduled for plea on Feb 25 in Dept. 38 at the Hall of Justice in San Jose on the incident.

On November 3, 2013 the San Jose Police Department received a report of a person near 3rd and E. Empire Streets with a dangerous weapon. A fight had broken out near the St. James Park where several suspects witnessed Hill going to a Silver pick-up where he retrieved the short-barreled shotgun. It is believed that during the confrontation, a shot went off, causing people to scatter in different directions.

Patrol Officers who were dispatched to the area spotted the vehicle with several occupants inside. Officers initiated a “High Risk Vehicle Stop”, detaining Hill and several passengers before conducting a search of the vehicle. The search revealed a short-barreled shotgun/rifle and 4-shot gun rounds.

Isaiah Antwon Hill was arrested near 3rd and East empire, just a few blocks from the Park.

Isaiah Antwon Hill was arrested near 3rd and East empire, just a few blocks from the Park.

Police contacted the caller, and took the witness to the scene where Hill had been detained, and asked him if this was the suspect he recognized seeing during the fight. The reporting party first said, “That’s the truck.” He then pointed at the suspect in handcuffs. “I’m ninety percent sure that’s him,” he said. Hill told officers that the rifle belonged to him. He was then taken into custody and booked into the Santa Clara Main Jail for the possession of the rifle and ammunition.

Follow up investigation into his actions yielded more information, leading SJPD officers to a residence where a person who had been sleeping in their bedroom woke up to find a bullet hole in their home. The resident had heard a loud noise that sounded like a gun going off. When they tried to look out their window to see what was going on, the window seemed all fogged up and they couldn’t see out, and thought that it might be raining. However, soon realizing there was a hole leading through the drywall near the ceiling led the resident to the outer hallway closet. The discharged bullet was located on the closet floor and collected for evidence.

American Flag Vandal Arrested

Santa Barbara - With apparent disregard for the fact that he was potentially violating Chapter 1 of Title 4 of the United States Code regarding the proper care of the flag of the United States of America (for which there are, according to various Supreme Court decisions, no criminal penalties pursuant to Constitutional provisions for the right to free speech), and that he was doing so in full view of passersby in one of downtown Santa Barbara’s most public places, Kenneth Ruz, 49, has been arrested and charged with vandalism and resisting arrest for cutting down the American Flag from a city flagpole.

When, according to Santa Barbara Police Department Public Information Officer Sgt. Riley Harwood, witnesses reported Ruz cutting down the flag at De La Guerra Plaza just before 10:00 p.m. on February 19th, SBPD patrol officers and members of the SBPD “night enforcement team” were quickly on the scene.  Ruz was soon located just a block away from the site of the alleged incident.

As Ruz was being questioned and given the routine “pat-down” by officers to verify that he was not carrying any weapons, Harwood reported that Ruz “decided to start to resist and stepped away as if he was about to run away.”  At that point, Ruz was subdued by four officers and quickly handcuffed.  He was held at the scene for identification by those who witnessed him cutting the ropes to the De la Guerra Plaza flagpole, and his identity was then verified as the perpetrator.

Ruz gave no explanation for his actions, and because his alleged crime was not witnessed by law enforcement, a citizen’s arrest was made.  He was later released on his own recognizance, and will presumably make a future court appearance where he may attempt to run an explanation for his actions up the judicial flagpole.
