MENTONE – San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputies arrested an elementary school music teacher for possession of child pornography earlier this month.

Michael Duffer, 41, of Mentone, who taught at three different elementary schools in the Snowline Joint Unified School District located in the area of Phelan, was arrested on Thursday, Feb. 12. He is due in San Bernardino Superior Court on Tuesday.

The investigation began on February 2 when the Duffer was observed after school hours in his classroom watching “obscene matter on his computer while he was partially undressed,” said Detective David Clifford.

Law enforcement investigators were immediately notified by school officials, who placed Duffer on administrative leave. An investigation by the county sheriff’s Specialized Investigation Division-Crimes Against Children Detail, which took over the case, learned that Duffer had been accessing child pornography from external storage devices, using school computers.

Law enforcement officials eventually confiscated his home computers. Investigation revealed that Duffer’s computer at his residence in Mentone, on the 1200 block of Buttercup Drive, also contained several files, photos and videos that included child pornography.

Mentone, which is located between Redlands and Yucaipa in San Bernardino County, is about a one-hour’s drive from his place of employment. Investigators disclosed that Duffer was also a part-time employee at First United Methodist Church, which is located in Redlands. He taught at three different schools, including Vista Verde Elementary, Heritage School and Wrightwood Elementary, according to a police release.

Duffer was booked into the Central Detention Center, his bail having been set at $25,000.

Snowline district officials, which reported the allegations to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing Division of Professional Practices, sent letters to students’ parents regarding the charges against Duffer, who has reportedly resigned from his teaching position.

They were both transported by acquaintances to the local hospital. Officers began an investigation into the shooting, but before they could learn any information from Luong, he died from his injuries.

The San Jose Police Homicide Unit has taken over the investigation to determine the motive and circumstances surrounding this murder. According to the San Jose Police Departments Sgt. Heahter Randol, “the shooting victim was identified as 34-year-old Manuel Alvarez Zuniga.” Zuniga was transported to a local area hospital where he was pronounced deceased a short time later.

A surveillance video of the incident showed a suspect grab a box of flavored cigars from the counter at Liquor 4 Less, and then drop them outside the store when trying to run from the site. Zuniga walked up to the dropped cigars and began to pick them up when shots were fired, hitting and seriously wounding Zuniga. Other reports are that Zuniga was chasing the cigar thief when he was fired on. Another security guard, Jonathan Morales, was not hit by the gunfire due to Zuniga’s actions, when he reportedly jumped in front of his partner during the incident.

The San Jose Police Department Homicide Unit is currently conducting follow up investigation to determine the motive and circumstances surrounding this murder. There is no suspect information to release at this time.

Zuniga’s friends have set up a Gofundme site in memory of Manny Zuniga to raise money for his family for funeral and mortgage expenses.

Security Guard Killed at San Bernardino Marijuana Dispensary

SAN BERNARDINO – A 25-year-old security guard was found shot to death at a local marijuana dispensary on Monday night.

Anthony Pineda, of Rowland Heights in neighboring Los Angeles County, was reportedly scheduled to work at this weekend’s Academy Awards. Two gunmen, described to police as black males, came into the strip mall shop shortly before 10 p.m. at 2844 West Rialto Ave., near Pepper Ave., said police.

Lt. Rich Lawhead, spokesman for San Bernardino police, said marijuana dispensaries are illegal, adding there are approximately 45 known businesses within the city, all of which are clandestine in nature.

He said the two men forced their way into the rear portion of the store, which looks to be an eyebrow threading business from the appearance of the storefront. Lawhead said the men forced their way in where the “products” were located. “It appears that the security guard returned fire,” said Lawhead, “and one of the suspects was shot.”

The suspects then fled from the business. San Bernardino Fire Department paramedics pronounced Pineda dead at the scene.
Reports of Pineda striking one of the assailants included appearances of bloody footprints leading from the location. In addition, there was an amount of blood loss left at the scene, said Lawhead.

It’s possible the assailant was critically wounded. Lawhead said witnesses who saw the assailants escape across the parking lot heard one of the suspects saying he had been struck. Police, however, had difficulty entering the business because it had been locked, forcing law enforcement officers to break down the front door to enter.

There were reports that the dispensary might have been previously located at a different location in the strip mall. Lawhead said employees were not initially cooperating with investigators, nor was it disclosed if anything was taken from the location, including marijuana. He said investigators weren’t certain if employees had locked Pineda inside the business, or if the security door was shut after everyone escaped the building.

Lawhead disclosed that a call to the police dispatch center reported the assailants were trying to rob the store. “The reporting party advised that the security guard had been shot and was probably dead,” he said. Police said security credentials were discovered in Pineda’s car that indicated he was scheduled to work the Academy Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday.

Carjacker Has A Really Bad Day, Then Gets Arrested

A man from Cameron Park, who had evaded authorities on Saturday, February 14, after he unsuccessfully attempted to carjack a woman on Interstate 80 near Davis, was arrested. Michael Lyman Bassett, Jr., 35, is now lodged at the Yolo County Jail in connection with a felony carjacking charge in addition to grand theft auto and hit-and-run charges. His bail is now set at $100,000.

According to California Highway Patrol officials, the events surrounding the carjack began when Bassett stole his mother’s 2003 Nissan Xterra, and then crashed into two other cars about 5:15 pm on eastbound Interstate 80 near the Mace Boulevard cloverleaf. A passenger in one of the cars he smashed received minor injuries.

After both collisions, the Nissan Xterra was no longer drive-able. Bassett thereupon exited it and fled the scene on foot. He soon came upon an Oldsmobile which had come to a halt on the I-80 shoulder after overheating.
The CHP reported that Bassett “yelled at the driver to get out of her vehicle and that he was taking it.” But this particular driver wanted no part of Bassett’s plan. She removed her Oldsmobile’s keys and ran toward the motorists who had been involved in the previous crashes.

But Bassett’s troubles were not over. He had to contend with the woman’s son, who confronted him as he tried unsuccessfully to start the Oldsmobile without keys. Then the victim of the second crash showed up and chased Bassett on foot a quarter mile into fields alongside the freeway. However, Bassett, according to the CHP, eluded his pursuer.

After that, several CHP officers, Yolo County Sheriff’s Deputies, a Davis Police K-9 unit and even a CHP helicopter were unable to track and capture Bassett. However, he had left numerous clues as to his identity behind in his mother’s Xterra.

Investigating officers discovered Bassett’s cell phone when it rang. The caller identified the phone as belonging to Bassett and told officers that he had stolen the Xterra.

Officers caught up with Bassett on February 15 and arrested him. According to the Daily Democrat, he was seen wearing only boxer shorts at the Chevron Gas Station on West Capitol Avenue in West Sacramento at 6:45 am Sunday. CHP officers responded to the report and arrested him. He will be arraigned at 11 a.m. February 19 in Yolo Superior Court.

Fisherman Busted for Interfering with Investigation

Santa Barbara – For the past few years, Santa Barbara’s near offshore waters have been a maritime freeway for drug smugglers transporting large quantities of marijuana up the Pacific Coast. Evidence of that illicit trafficking is frequently found on county beaches in the form of abandoned “panga” boats, with the occasional retrieval of baled marijuana by the ton.

At dawn on February 16th, local area urchin fisherman Erik Bjorklund, 59, and his deckhand Josh Brockway came face-to-face with the remnants of what appeared to be a failed smuggling attempt in the form of a half-submerged panga with two new motors he estimated to be worth close to $40,000. Apparently feeling as though he’d stumbled upon a genuine windfall, Bjorklund and his crew promptly tied the panga to their fishing boat and began bailing water out of it. “I hopped in there with a bucket and got all the water out and it started floating up perfect,” Brockway later reported.

It was at that point that Bjorklund used a black marker to write his name on the side of the panga pursuant to his immediate claim of salvage under maritime law. Just as he did so, however, a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter arrived overhead to ascertain that there were no individuals in the water or contraband floating nearby.

As Bjorklund was towing his claimed booty into the Santa Barbara harbor, his vessel was approached by Harbor Police boats with Santa Barbara Police and Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department personnel on board. According to SBSD Public Information Officer Kelly Hoover, Bjorklund “refused to release the boat to U.S. Coast Guard personnel”, whereupon Sheriff’s deputies assured him that “the boat was considered evidence in a possible drug trafficking case.”

But Bjorklund, perhaps feeling that his salty rights superceded those of law enforcement, refused to comply, earning himself an arrest and citation for interfering with a criminal investigation. Released at the scene, Bjorklund will now have the opportunity to properly educate himself on “the law of salvage”.

Suspect Turned Herself In To Police

SANTA CRUZ—The Santa Cruz Police have arrested The ‘Bubbly Bandit’ after she turned herself in at the Police Department last Tuesday.  The ‘Bubbly Bandit’ turned out to be 49-year-old Laurie Dawn Soderman, a Santa Cruz transient.

On January 19, Police said that Soderman walked out of the Shopper’s Corner in Santa Cruz without paying for six bottles of Champagne. Images in photos released to the media by the police show Soderman walking right past the clerks. She concealed all six bottles under her coat as she walked past the checkout stand while clerks were busy with other customers. The estimated value of the champagne was $600.00, which escalated the incident to grand theft.

Soderman chose the Shopper's Corner as her latest source for a celebratory drink.

Soderman chose the Shopper’s Corner as her latest source for a celebratory drink.

Police stated that after she walked out of the store she drove off in an older model green Ford Explorer.

The next day, after the release of the photos, police received numerous tips that the ‘Bubbly Bandit was Soderman. On February 16, nearly a month after the incident occurred, Soderman turned herself into police. She was booked in the Santa Cruz County jail on charges of shoplifting property of less than $950.00, grand theft and violating her probation.  Soderman is being held at the Santa Cruz County Jail in Lieu of 1000.00 Bail.

Soderman has an extensive history of theft, and was on probation for a prior conviction from December of 2013 for second-degree burglary in which she also stole high-end champagne. Arrest records going back to 2005 show several arrests on drug charges as well. In May and August of 2005 she was charged with possession of a controlled substance and paraphernalia. Those were followed in September with arrests for petty theft, burglary, possessing stolen property, and conspiracy, along with a drug possession charge.

In December of 2006 she was arrested for grand theft and violating her probation, and in June of 2006 she had another controlled substance possession arrest. She was also arrested twice in 2011 for petty theft.

Convicted Child Molester Gets Maxed Out

Santa Barbara – Manuel Peter Munoz, 65, following a 16-day jury trial in which he was found guilty of five felony counts of child molestation, has received the maximum sentence under the law.

At the behest of Santa Barbara County Senior Deputy District Attorney Paula Waldman—widely regarded as a ruthless prosecutor in cases involving female and underage victims of alleged assaults of any kind—Munoz was sentenced on February 9th to 75 years to life in prison.

Munoz was sentenced by Santa Barbara Superior Court Judge Michael Carrozzo pursuant to his December 9, 2014 conviction of forcible child molestation. His victims, according to Santa Barbara Police Department Public Information Officer Sgt. Riley Harwood, were two boys—both his grandsons–under the age of 14 who were at the time residing with Munoz. Prior to his October 2013 arrest, “investigation revealed that Munoz lived with the victims and their parents” and “when Munoz was entrusted to care for the victims, he repeatedly molested them.”

Pursuant to reports of the suspected molestations by individuals outside the Munoz family, Waldman obtained a $5,000,000 arrest warrant for Munoz which was served upon him after he had relocated to San Francisco. Once in custody, he was promptly transported to Santa Barbara, charged for his crimes, and ultimately convicted.

Upon the rendering of the jury verdict in her favor, Waldman spoke openly to the press about her victory as is her custom, saying “just because a victim’s disclosure comes out in bits and pieces, doesn’t mean that the victim wasn’t molested.”

As no individuals serving time under California’s current indeterminate sentencing guidelines have ever been released from prison, it is highly unlikely that the 65-year old Munoz will be able to apply for parole eligibility following his first 75 years of incarceration.

Arrested were 50-year-old Hollister resident Ramon Larios Lucatero, who was also identified in arrest reports as Raymond Al Larios Sr. with an address in San Diego, and 34-year-old Tony Jose Antonio Campa.

The investigation led officers to a house on Westside Blvd. in Hollister.

The investigation led officers to a house on Westside Blvd. in Hollister.

On February 5, Hollister Police served a search warrant as part of an investigation into a home on the 200 block of Westside Boulevard for allegedly selling narcotics. The Hollister Police Department was assisted in the execution of the warrant by the Unified Narcotic Enforcement Team and the San Benito County Sheriff’s Office.

During the search police recovered methamphetamine, marijuana, and a stolen handgun. Police also recovered a large amount of money and stolen property from the home.

Heat of Passion Turns into Firebomb Attempt

Santa Barbara County – Chad Ramos, a 34-year old resident of Santa Maria apparently had the hots for a lady who was no longer interested in the warm affection he was interested in sharing with her. But unrequited love occasionally has a way of fueling the flames of male desire to the point of irrationality sparking behaviors that one might consider “too hot to handle”.

If the events leading to Ramos’ arrest in the pre-dawn hours of February 17th as alleged by Santa Maria Police Department officers responding to a 911 Emergency call at an East Grant Street home are any indication, he certainly allowed his feelings for his ex-girlfriend to spontaneously combust into flammably felonious foolishness.

According to SMPD Ofcr R. Torres, the female object of Ramos’ passions reported that at approximately 4:00 a.m. on the 17th he threw “a homemade incendiary device” at her house and then hot-footed it out of the area. Arriving officers discovered what appeared to be a version of a “Molotov cocktail”—a plastic bottle filled with gasoline with a raglike fuse—lying in an adjacent driveway, apparently extinguished by errant contact with a trailer parked in the residence driveway.

As Ramos had previously been arrested on February 2nd and charged with unauthorized entry of the same house, officers had reasonable suspicion that he was involved in this incident. They subsequently made contact with him at his home where he was arrested and taken into custody. Ramos was then transported to Santa Barbara County Jail where he was booked on charges of arson and terrorist threats, with his bail set at $250,000.

Perhaps next time he’ll simply go with the old Valentine’s Day standby: a box of chocolates.

Child Care or Child Torture?

Santa Barbara County – What may well become one of the most sensational criminal investigations in the area’s recent history got off to a running start on February 10th with the arrest of Georgina Imelda Ruiz-Bojorquez, a 50-year old day-care provider offering her services from her Santa Maria home.

According to Santa Maria Police Department Sgt. Paul Van Meel, an arrest warrant for Bojorquez was obtained pursuant to an investigation of multiple allegations of child abuse and torture taking place at her facility. “The investigation resulted in numerous interviews and the discovery of multiple witnesses and victims,” he reported to the media.

While Van Meel did not release any allegation details or the location of the child care facility operated by Bojorquez, he indicated that reports of “repeated physical abuse of young children” detail incidents taking place between 1998 and 2005 and “involved very young children”.

Bojorquez was arrested at her home and transported to Santa Barbara County Jail where she was booked on multiple charges of child abuse and torture, with her bail at that time set at $500,000. Immediately following, however, SMPD detectives became aware that Bojorquez had active plans to post bail and immediately flee the country upon her release.

Pursuant to that information, detectives requested that the Santa Barbara District Attorney’s office revoke her bail to hold her over for preliminary hearing. That request was granted and upheld by Santa Barbara Superior Court Judge Gustavo Lavayen, and she remains in custody on a no-bail hold.

Two local cities reeling from knife wielding attackers around Valentine’s Day

This St. Valentine’s Day weekend became a blizzard of arrests for Santa Clara County law enforcement, ranging from from drunk driving to domestic violence. And during the week around Valentine’s Day, San Jose Police shot and killed a knife wielding suicidal suspect, while the Santa Clara Police responded to a deadly assault of a knife wielding suspect who had stabbed another student who was living in a dorm at the University of Santa Clara.

23-year-old Phillip Watkins was apparently distraught and showed up at the home of his fiance and her mother, his 3-year-old daughter, and his mother were gathered on Wednesday, February 11. According to KRON TV, he spoke about killing himself, and then he called 911 for help. When police arrived, he rushed at them with a knife. According to spokesperson Sgt. Heather Randol of the San Jose police, officers fired their weapons after he rushed them, refusing to drop his knife. He died as a result of the gunfire. It was speculated that he may have intended to commit “suicide by cop” by forcing them to fire at him.

The next week, according to the Santa Clara Police Department, 19-year-old Dillon Kim, an undergrad student who was living at Graham Hall near the campus at Santa Clara University, stabbed his dormitory roommate on Tuesday, February 17 at around 3:30 AM. The attack occurred at the Santa Clara University Campus, where it was reported that the victim, who was sleeping at the time, was attacked by his roommate with a knife. The victim suffered from a knife wound and several lacerations.

The Santa Clara Police are being tight lipped about what brought on the attack. No motive for the attack on his roommate, and himself, with a knife is known at this time. Students at the University are being acclaimed as heroes as they entered the dorm room, helping to stop Kim’s attack, as well as helping both the victim and attacker treat their wounds.

A booking photo of Kim shows a large laceration along the front and side of his neck, with more than 30 stitches on the giant cut. Kim was booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail and is expected to undergo a mental health evaluation before appearing in court. The District Attorney’s Office has filed attempted murder charges against Kim for the deadly attack.

Caught in the Act…by a Cop

Ventura County – If there is a single, most important tenet of professional burglars, it is this: whenever one is perpetrating the surreptitious theft of property belonging to others, the act should be conducted neither in view of the property owners, uninvolved third parties, or any representative of a law enforcement agency. Any burglar worth his or her salt would consider that, presumably, “Rule #1”.

Based upon the events transpiring in proximity to an active construction site in the late afternoon hours of February 8th in the city of Fillmore, however, it’s apparent that at least one local area burglar forgot to read “Rule #1”. It was at approximately 5:00 p.m. on that Sunday—a time and day when any activity at a construction site might raise the eyebrow of any casual passerby—that a Ventura County Sheriff patrol deputy observed Daniel Freitas, a 33-year old local resident apparently “at work” on the site and stopped to check things out.

Freitas, who was properly garbed as a construction worker, complete with bright yellow vest and hard hat, appeared to the deputy to be in the act of covering some equipment and property with a water-protective tarp in an area adjacent to a storage shed. But, according to Ventura County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Det. John Fox, when the deputy made contact with Freitas and engaged him in conversation regarding his activity on the premises, “the deputy discovered the storage building had been forced open and thousands of dollars in tools removed.”

It didn’t take the deputy long to come to the conclusion that Freitas was, in fact, trespassing, was not employed in any construction labor capacity, and was concealing stolen tools with the intent to retrieve them at a later time.

Hard hat or not, Freitas was arrested at the scene, transported to Ventura County Jail, and booked on charges of commercial burglary with his bail set at $70,000. While in custody, one might surmise that Freitas will have better access to “Rule #1” and all professional protocols pertaining to his apparent vocation.
