Chase, Drug Suspect to Appear in Court on Several Charges

COLTON – A man that led police on a high speed chase that covered two counties is scheduled to appear in court, most likely this week. David Ronald Vargas, 35, of Colton who had been booked into West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga, had a $500,000 bail attached, though he had additional warrants.

Police said Vargas led them on a high speed chase beginning at 10:17 a.m. on November 5. Reports said a Colton police detective, driving an unmarked police car, spotted Vargas in a silver Acura near Pepper Ave. and East Valley Blvd.

Vargas, who police say was on parole, was recognized from previous criminal-based incidents, and was wanted on warrants totaling almost $1 million, according to jail records. One, according to reports, was a no bail warrant for San Bernardino County.

When the detective recognized Vargas, according to a police official, he started a pursuit that began eastbound on Interstate 10, taking Interstate 215. The chase eventually reached speeds up to 120 miles an hour, striking walls and guardrails along the way, according to police.

The pursuing detective had gotten back-up from several other officers in marked cars that joined the pursuit. Vargas, known to carry weapons, was reportedly armed and dangerous. When he exited at Columbia Ave., Vargas slammed into a guardrail which crippled the car, though he was still able to drive another half-mile on West La Cadena Drive. When his car broke down, Vargas surrendered to police. Officers arrested him at gunpoint, according to reports.

Though he faces additional charges pertaining to the warrants, Vargas was booked into jail on charges of resisting arrest and possessing drugs with intent to sell, according to records. Police did not specify the related crimes on the additional warrants.

Couple out for a few burglaries runs into a problem

SANTA ROSA – Friday, November 14, apparently started off with a drive from their home in Santa Rosa up north about an hour and a half to Geyserville for Mark Brian Hagan, 54, and Brandie Rae Radabaugh, 47. The drive along the Redwood Highway, otherwise known as the 101, is a pleasant one, through the Sonoma Valley wine country vineyards and farmlands, passing through Healdsburg and by the Francis Ford Coppola winery.

Whether they had a specific destination in mind when they made the trip is not known. They may even have been on an overnight visit to the small, historic tourist town, which has a population of under 1000 and features bed-and-breakfast inns, restaurants, and of course wine tasting. But, according to the Sonoma Sheriff’s office, while they were there, they broke into a home, burglarized it, and left. The only clue to their identity was the white Dodge pickup truck that was seen leaving the home by a witness.

The pair chose the wrong home along Mark West Springs Road in north east Santa Rosa.

The pair chose the wrong home along Mark West Springs Road in north east Santa Rosa.

They then made their way back towards home, but before reaching Santa Rosa, they turned off the Highway after passing through Larkfield-Wikiup onto Mark West Springs Road. They followed the road up into the hills as Mark Springs Road runs through the forest next to Mark Springs Creek. Again, it is not clear if they had a specific destination, or were just looking for a promising home to break into. But they found a home in the 1400′s that was not occupied, and pulled the white pickup into the driveway.

Unknown to Hagan and Radabaugh, the homeowner had a fairly extensive security system installed. When they arrived, the video surveillance system caught them getting out of the truck, breaking a window, and entering the house. At this point, the burglar alarm sounded, alerting the pair that they had been detected. They quickly fled without taking anything from the home.

The alarm alerted the Sheriff’s department to the break-in, and deputies were sent to the location. The homeowner came home as well, arriving just before the deputies and discovered the break-in. As the investigation began, they reviewed the video footage and were able to not only see the two suspects, but read the license plate of the truck. Property Crimes detectives took over the investigation, and ran the plates, finding it was registered to Hagan. They looked up an older booking photo of Hagan, and found he matched the appearance of the man seen in the video. (He had been arrested on New Year’s Day in 2013 on possession and being under the influence of a controlled substance.) They requested a search warrant for Hagan’s home and vehicles, and found the white Dodge pickup was parked in the driveway. They served the warrant at 9:30 that evening.

Brandie Radabaugh image from MySpace.com

Brandie Radabaugh image from MySpace.com

They found Hagan was home with Brandie Radabaugh, whom they recognized as the second person seen in the video footage. They also knew her from a similar case in 2010 when she was arrested for burglary after being caught in home video. She had been released from prison only recently, and was on parole. Additionally, prior to that arrest, she had been charged in 2005 for grand theft, caretaker theft on an elder, fraudulent credit card use, resisting arrest, and battery on a peace officer, in addition to a probation violation at that time as well. The couple were both arrested on suspicion of burglary.

A search of the small home on West 6th Street in central Santa Rosa revealed stolen property identified as coming from the earlier Geyserville burglary. Hagan was charged with two counts of residential burglary, possession of stolen property, and conspiracy. He was also charged for having methamphetamine. Radabaugh was charged with two counts of residential burglary, possession of stolen property, and conspiracy. They were both booked at the Sonoma County Jail. Hagan’s bail was set at $80,000, while Radabaugh was held on no-bail status due to her parole violation.

While there they found evidence for what they believed was a drug lab. The firefighters called the Police Department and turned their investigation over to the Anti-Crime Team.

The Anti-Crime team was able to get a search warrant for the residence signed by a Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge. They served the warrant and found a room in the home was being used as a clandestine Butane Honey Oil Extraction Lab.

It should be noted that the lab was located within feet of a child’s play area. Members of the Santa Clara County Special Enforcement Team, who have specialized training in these types of labs, along with the Unified Narcotics Enforcement Task Force, began to dismantle and seize the equipment used in the lab.

Neighbors detected a suspicious odor coming from Vargas' house on Rosanna St.

They found several butane gas cans, a pressure-cooking device, mechanical pumps and pure alcohol. They also seized some concentrated cannabis/honey oil that had a street value of $15,600. Along with the honey oil they confiscated some marijuana that had a street value of $6,000.

The resident, 31-year-old Rene Vargas, was arrested and charged with manufacturing a controlled substance, possession of marijuana/concentrated cannabis for sale and child endangerment. His bail has been at $106,000.00.

An investigation has determined that the manufacturing of the honey oil was going on in the residence while Vargas, along with his 59-year-old father, his wife and their 11-month-old son occupied the house.

Two San Francisco skinheads sentenced for series of five Bay Area bank robberies

Luckert & Martin. Sounds like a comedy duo, doesn’t it?

They’re not. They’re a bank-robbing duo. A skinhead bank-robbing duo. Nothing funny about these two.

San Francisco residents Michael Luckert, 43, and Jeremiah Martin, 37, were recently sentenced for a string of bank robberies around the Bay Area that took place over a two-month stretch, starting in December of 2012 and ending in February of 2013, according to the Fremont Police Department.

Bank of the West, Fremont (Google Maps)

Bank of the West, Fremont (Google Maps)

The most recent heist took place in Fremont on February 11, 2013. According to police, at around 1:40 p.m., officers were alerted about a robbery that had just taken place at the Bank of the West on Paseo Padre Parkway. Witnesses said two male suspects entered the bank with bandanas partially concealing their faces. The suspects carried simulated weapons beneath their clothing and demanded money. After getting an undisclosed amount of cash, the suspects fled the scene in a maroon colored pickup truck.

Fremont police circulated descriptions of the two suspects and the vehicle to other Bay Area police departments.

Less than hour after the robbery, an alert Newark resident saw two suspicious men exit a maroon pickup and run toward the E-Z 8 Motel at 5555 Cedar Court in Newark. The witness notified Newark police who contacted Fremont police.

Officers from both departments teamed up with a SWAT team to surround the motel. The two suspects had barricaded themselves in room 207, according to the San Jose Mercury News. Police evacuated the motel during the standoff to protect the guests.

An hour later, Martin gave himself up.

Luckert was a tougher nut to crack. Five hours of negotiations didn’t do the trick. Tear gas finally did.

Fremont detectives, along with San Francisco, San Rafael, and Dublin detectives and the Federal Bureau of Investigations, were able to connect Luckert and Martin to four other Bay Area bank robberies:

  • The December 20, 2012 robbery of a Citibank in San Rafael
  • The February 4, 2013 robbery of a Mechanics Bank in San Francisco
  • The February 8, 2013 robbery of a California Bank & Trust in San Francisco
  • The February 11, 2013 robbery of a US Bank in Dublin

The duo eventually pleaded guilty to the series of robberies.

In October of 2013, Luckert was sentenced to 5 years, 3 months in a federal prison. Martin was sentenced last month to 10 years, 5 months in a federal prison.

Perhaps now the two men will have time to work on their comedy act.

All those hats!

All those hats!

During a search of the vehicle, officers discovered a loaded .45 caliber semi-automatic handgun beneath the passenger seat. They also found an undisclosed amount of heroin and methamphetamine in the vehicle. PRPD detectives were called out to the scene to determine if the handgun was part of several that were stolen in a recent residential burglary.

When detectives inventoried the vehicle’s contents they discovered a second .45 caliber handgun in the trunk along with several boxes of ammunition.
Detectives also discovered property that was directly linked to at least three other vehicle burglaries that all occurred within the last week.

Needed a Smoke, Robbed the Store

Ventura – In apparent disregard of the reality in today’s health-conscious environment where it’s no longer an easy thing to find a place anywhere in public where a gentleman can enjoy the pleasures of a good smoke, in the mid-afternoon of November 16th Jay Quintero, a 22-year old resident of Ventura entered his local gas station convenience store in search of what the Ventura Police Department Watch Commander’s report to the media described as “tobacco items”.

According to the VPD report, Quintero “had brandished a knife at the clerk” just before he lunged across the counter at the North Ventura Avenue USA Gas Station in a dangerous attempt to intimidate the clerk into backing off and enabling his pilfering a pack or two of cigarettes. In making his threatening move, Quintero “knocked over several items” before realizing that the clerk—apparently not terribly intimidated at this point—was dialing 911 to report the robbery in progress.

At that point, perhaps realizing that no pack of Lucky Strikes was worth a felony strike, Quintero made a hasty exit from the premises and departed on foot without any stolen merchandise in hand.

Shortly thereafter, VPD patrol units rolled up and, with the store clerk’s description of Quintero, quickly instigated a search of the commercial area surrounding the gas station. Quintero, perhaps not the fleetest of foot, was located just a block away and was quickly identified as the perpetrator of the crime. He was promptly transported to the Ventura County Jail where he was booked and charged with attempted robbery.

San Luis Obispo Police have a man in custody after he allegedly punched a store clerk in the face last Thursday.

According to SLOPD, officers responded around 10:13 a.m. to the Flip Flop Shop, 858 Higuera St., regarding a report of an assault that just occurred.  According to the victim, a 23-year-old SLO female resident, she was working inside the store when a male subject approached her and started a conversation. She told police, after several minutes inside the store, the suspect walked up to her and punched her in the face.

According to SLOPD, the victim sustained a bloody nose and bruising to her face. The suspect, identified as Justin Edmond Pard, 20, a transient from SLO, yelled profanities at the victim and fled the store after the assault. Police received news of the suspect’s whereabouts about 45 minutes later from a neighboring business owner who saw the suspect at Barnes and Nobles bookstore.

The victim, who was taken to the suspect’s area, was able to identify him as the assailant. Police found a ten-inch fixed blade kitchen knife on Pard’s person during a search. Pard was transported and booked at the San Luis Obispo County Jail on charges of assault and carrying a concealed dirk or dagger. His bail was set at $2,000. However, Pard was released from SLO County Jail with promise to appear in court.

At approximately 9:30 p.m. the same day, SLOPD received a call from Black Horse Espresso, 796 Foothill RD., regarding a male in their business acting strange and causing employees and customers to feel uncomfortable. The callers told police the male was possibly the same subject arrested earlier in the day for the assault downtown.

Upon officers’ arrival at the scene, they discovered the male suspect had left the area on foot. Officers searched the area for the suspect, who they believed was Pard. They found Pard around 11:50 p.m. sleeping behind the church located at 651 Foothill.

The property had several signs posted with “no trespassing”. When officer questioned Pard, he stated that he knew he was trespassing. Pard was arrested for trespassing and illegal lodging and he was booked with a $2000 bail. Pard was transported to SLO County Jail and will be held until he is able to post bail or arraigned in court.

HAWTHORNE, CA—Her name implies cleanliness, but her rap sheet of prostitution charges indicates otherwise.

Breonna Sudds, 22, was arrested by Hawthorne police officers on Thursday, November 13 at approximately 8:50 a.m. on the 11400 block of Birch Avenue in Hawthorne. The unemployed San Pedro resident was picked up for loitering with the intent to prostitute (653.22(A)PC)—a charge with which she apparently is intimately familiar.

TEMECULA – Authorities have released photographs of a man believe to have robbed First Citizen’s Bank twice and are asking the public for help.
First Citizen’s Bank at 44575 Avenida De Missiones in the city of Temecula was first robbed on Tuesday, July 8 at about 2:00 p.m. by an unknown male. The suspect entered the bank and threatened employees with a weapon. He demanded money and the tellers complied. According to the Riverside Sheriff’s Department, the suspect fled with an undisclosed amount of money. No employees were harmed.

Officers from the Temecula Police Department were unable to locate anyone matching the suspect’s description. Surveillance photos from the bank were obtained and detectives continued their search, but were able to pinpoint a suspect.

Four months later another robbery occurred at the same bank. Apparently emboldened by his first successful attempt, in the mid-afternoon of Thursday November 13 the same man entered the bank and once again approached the teller and demanded money. Jumping over the counter, the suspect grabbed an undisclosed amount of cash from the drawer. The teller complied and the robber fled the bank. Again, no one was injured.

Officers and detectives from the Temecula Police Department responded to the scene, but were unable to locate the suspect in their search. After reviewing surveillance video from the second robbery, detectives feel confident that both crimes were perpetrated by the same suspect and are asking the public for help in identifying him. The serial bank robber is described as a white male adult in his 20’s, about 5’11”, 150 lbs. and with a beard. At the latest robbery he was wearing a black and yellow baseball cap, dark long-sleeve button shirt, and dark pants.

INGLEWOOD, CA—Irony comes in a seemingly endless array of instances, and the multiple arrests of a man whose name is the same as the attorney for the city in which he was arrested twice in 2014 is worth noting.

Suspect Saw Ghosts

SANTA CRUZ—The Santa Cruz Police Department is operating with one less officer these days, not because of budget cuts, but by an injury sustained on the job. To date, the Santa Police Department has experienced 15 officers missing work due to injury. In this most recent incident an officer was injured arresting a suspect under the influence.

On November 16, The Santa Cruz Police Department received a call of a man acting suspiciously in the 100 block of Walnut Avenue in Santa Cruz. When an officer arrived on scene he encountered 21-year-old Scotts Valley resident Chase Desjardin.

Desjardin was displaying signs of being under the influence of some king of drug. While the officer waited for his backup to arrive, he tried to determine what substance the young man was on.

“In this kind of case, the situation can go sideways at any time.” A Santa Cruz Police Department Spokesperson wrote in a press release, “The problem is, that when suspects are under the influence they can display unusual strength and normal arrest techniques don’t work.”

Desjardin’s dilemma was that he was apparently “seeing ghosts” and decided to fight the officers. Desjardin was finally taken into custody after several minutes of fighting.

During the melee, a 4-year-veteran of the Santa Cruz Police Department was injured. Originally it was thought that he had broken his ankle, but while in the hospital for treatment it was determined that it was just a serious sprain, and not broken.

Although this is great news for the officer he will have to miss work while he recovers from his injury, leaving the police department short one more officer.  Desjardin was also taken to the hospital for observation while he detoxed from the hallucinogenic he was on.

Chase Desjardin was transported to Santa Cruz County Jail after his hospital stint and booked on charges of disorderly conduct, resisting a peace officer causing serious bodily injury, and battery on emergency personnel.  His bail has been set at $5,000.00.

FRESNO – The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office arrested five people Wednesday morning after what started as an investigation into graffiti found at various locations in downtown Fresno.

The sheriff’s office arrested Mike Anthony Estrada, 24, Ruben Michael Banuelos, 21, Daniel Jimenez, 20, and two 17-year-old boys, all of whom are from Fresno, on various charges.

An investigation into the vandalism began in mid-May when graffiti was discovered at the Courthouse Park Peace Officers Memorial in downtown Fresno. The same graffiti was also found at other locations nearby.

Detectives learned that some of the suspects in the vandalism case were associated with a well-known criminal street gang in the Midwest and East Coast, which is new to the Fresno area. Detectives have been able to identify around 25 members of that gang in Fresno. Some of the members were wanted for arrest.

On Wednesday morning, detectives and the SWAT team served warrants at seven Fresno locations, leading to the arrest of the five suspects.

Estrada was booked on a felony narcotics warrant and for being a felon in possession of ammunition. Banuelos was booked on charges of possessing an explosive device. Jimenez was arrested on an outstanding warrant for probation violations. One of the juveniles was arrested on charges of home invasion robbery and vehicle theft.

The other juvenile who was arrested was the person detectives believe was responsible for vandalizing the memorial in May. He was booked into the juvenile facility on felony vandalism and gang-related charges.

Detectives are still looking for two other juveniles who are suspects in the memorial vandalism.
