SAN JOSE – According to the San Jose Police Department, a young couple was responsible for a home invasion robbery, when a teenage victim was tied up in his home while they ransacked the house. According to SJPD Sergeant Heather Randol, “On July 30, 2014, the San Jose Police Department investigated a Home Invasion occurred in the 7000 block of Anjou Creek Circle”. The home is in south San Jose in the Orchard Creek neighborhood. Police were able to follow-up information leading to the arrest of the two suspects, 19-year-old Christopher Nguyen and 19-year-old Tiffany Nguyen.

The victim's home was on Anjou Creek Circle.

The victim’s home was on Anjou Creek Circle.

The SJPD robbery unit identified Christopher Nguyen as the person who had committed a robbery with a female accomplice who waited outside the home until the suspect exited the home with goods he had stolen. Randol said, “Suspect Christopher Nguyen was in possession of two firearms when he forced entry into the home”.

Nguyen broke into the home by breaking glass to open the window. During his entry he awoke a sleeping teenage victim. The victim confronted the burglar, but was unable to stop the suspect who was armed with a handgun. Randol said, “The suspect bound the victim with zip ties and then proceeded to ransack the house for valuables”.

Further investigation identified Tiffany Nguyen as a lookout in the robbery. Both subjects were apprehended by the San Jose Police MERGE Unit on October 23 and booked into the Santa Clara County Jail for robbery, false imprisonment, conspiracy to commit robbery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. It has been reported that Tiffany is Christopher’s girlfriend, who happens to have the same common Vietnamese last name. Though both live in San Jose, they have separate residences, according to arrest records.

Christopher Nguyen had been arrested twice before this year. On July 25, just days before the home invasion, he was charged with being under the influence of a controlled substance. Earlier in October, 10 days before being arrested in this incident, he was charged with a weapons offense related to possessing a billy club or similar implement, like a blackjack or leaded cane.

Persons with information regarding the above case are urged to contact Detective Chan of the San Jose Police Department’s Robbery Unit at (408) 277-4166.

Ventura - Although it may be common knowledge that those individuals who have been convicted of serious felonies in California are forever prohibited from owning or possessing a wide range of weapons, firearms, and ammunition, that proscription is frequently ignored by certain members of the “parolee population”.

According to the Ventura Police Department Records Division report to the media issued on October 28th, it was in the early afternoon of that day that Richard Rodriguez, a 33-year old resident of Ventura and documented gang member walking the streets under the umbrella of an active parole status, was found to be one of those who apparently flouts any legislative limitations upon his ability to arm himself to the teeth.

The discovery of Rodriguez’s parole violation came, according to the VPD report, pursuant to an ongoing Ventura Police Street Crimes unit investigation into “complaints regarding possible drug sales” at a Ventura residence. The product of that investigation indicated that Rodriguez lived in a garage behind the home that had been converted into living space.

With search warrant in hand, detectives conducted a search of the property on October 28th, whereupon Rodriguez made at attempt to depart in his car, prompting deputies to summarily detain him at the scene. While so restrained, Rodriguez had the opportunity to observe the deputies discover a cache of weapons in the garage that included “seven firearms including a loaded shotgun and loaded handgun, additional ammunition for the weapons and methamphetamine.”

Following the rather fruitful search, Rodriguez was transported to Ventura County Jail where he was booked on charges of prohibited person in possession of firearms, prohibited person in possession of ammunition, possession of a stolen firearm, and possession of drugs for sale while possessing a loaded firearm.

Suspect May Be Related To A Second And Third Incident

HOLLISTER—Once again investigators with the Hollister Police Department are looking for the public’s help in identifying a burglary suspect who broke into ‘Community Pantry’ on San Felipe Road.

On Monday October 13, just after midnight, Hollister Police responded to the ‘Community Pantry’ on the 1100 block of San Felipe Road because of a burglary alarm activation.

When officers arrived they located an open door on the side of the business. Officers searched the interior but found no one inside. An investigation revealed that an additional door had been forced open on the opposite side of the building.

Suspect was Seen Throwing Signs

SALINAS—Salinas Police have arrested a teenager for walking around carrying a handgun. Authorities Arrested 18-year-old Salinas resident Christian Torres on Tuesday after an anonymous caller witnessed him ‘throwing signs’ and yelling at passersby.

Early morning this Tuesday, an anonymous person called 911 and reported that they saw a person “throwing hand signs and yelling”. He continued to report that it seemed like he was challenging others to a fight. The caller continued following the subject while he walked down Williams Road and provided dispatchers with updates.

A Salinas Police Officer who was waiting for a tow truck on an unrelated call spotted the subject near the intersection of Williams Road and Alma Avenue. He helped guide other officers, via radio, to where the subject was located.

Officers made contact with the subject, now identified as Torres, on the 400 block of Williams Road. When officers asked him if he had anything on him, Torres dropped to his knees and placed his hands behind his back. The officers said he stated “that he had a gun in his jacket.” They immediately took Torres into custody. He was just a block from his residence at a nearby apartment complex.

In a subsequent search of Torres’ person, officers did find the gun, along with a small amount of methamphetamine and a meth pipe.

“When the public witnesses something like this they should call us.” Salinas Police Commander Sheldon Bryan stated, “We ask that the calls continue so that we can get guns and drugs off the streets.”

Torres was arrested and transported to the Monterey County Jail and booked on gun and drug charges.

Santa Barbara County - In what could have been modern-day action movie crossover version of the John Ritter-Suzanne Sommers1980’s TV hit show “Three’s Company” and director Ron Howard’s “Grand Theft Auto”, two women and their male companion were arrested on October 17th in the city of Buellton—just a few miles north of Santa Barbara—following a protracted and harrowing car chase.

According to Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department Public Information Officer Kelly Hoover, the action began in the middle of the afternoon at a busy gas station when authorities were alerted to a report of a man “hitting the windows of a black Cherokee Jeep with his fists and armed with a knife.” As SBSD deputies rolled up to the scene, the Jeep was on its way out of the gas station and accelerating toward the southbound U.S. 101 onramp. As the deputies began their pursuit of the Jeep, they became aware that the same vehicle had been involved in a car chase just two weeks earlier over Route 154, a notoriously dangerous mountain highway connecting the Santa Ynez Valley with the City of Santa Barbara.

As deputies initiated their pursuit, the Jeep driver failed to yield to sirens and flashing red lights, at which point “ Santa Barbara County Air Support unit was brought in to assist,” Hoover reported. CHP units also joined the chase, now reaching speeds of more than 100 mph, with the Jeep careening down both right and left freeway shoulders as it sped past other members of the motoring public. This went on for nearly thirty miles, with the Jeep finally exiting the freeway just north of the Santa Barbara city limits, racing down a heavily traveled two-lane road through multiple school zones “with complete disregard for public safety,” as described by Hoover to the media.

Fully a half hour after the chase began, the Jeep veered onto a ranch road, ultimately reaching a dead end created by Sheriff’s vehicles positioned in the Jeep’s path at the direction of the Air Support Unit, whereupon the Jeep slammed into a patrol car and caroming into a tree. Wedged between the tree and the patrol car, the three occupants of the Jeep—Shane Lydick, 34, Kristy DeLaCerna, 36, and Camilla DePerna, 24—all refused to exit the vehicle in spite of the fact that they were faced with unholstered service weapons pointed at them.

At that point, deputies “broke several windows out of the vehicle and forcibly removed all three suspects,” whereupon each was placed under arrest. Lydick and DePerena, each suspected of driving the Jeep at various times during the chase–were booked into Santa Barbara County Jail on charges of felony evading with a motor vehicle; all three were charged with possession of burglary tools and are in custody on a no-bail hold.

A Second Cop Arrested for Domestic Violence

Santa Barbara County - Vandenberg Village, the quiet unincorporated bedroom community of 6500 souls serving the residential needs of Vandenberg Air Force Base—one of the nation’s most active space-shot launch centers—ranks highly among the states “safest” communities and is generally free of criminal activity.

Supporting that peaceful security is the Lompoc Police Department, an agency that boasts a new police chief in the person of former Portland, Oregon police captain Pat Walsh who came in as Lompoc Police Chief on September 16th. Given his recent tenure, Walsh could reasonably be a bit nonplussed by the fact that during this calendar year, no fewer than three of his officers have been arrested and face criminal charges.

Matthew Lee Hill

Matthew Lee Hill

The first of those involved charges of driving under the influence filed against officer David Garcia in March of this year. The second officer arrest occurred in May, with charges of felony vandalism and making criminal threats filed against LPD Sgt. Joseph Stetz pursuant to what was described in the media as “a domestic dispute”. On October 23rd, that case saw a court ruling denying Stetz access to firearms confiscated at the time of his arrest and prohibiting him from molesting, annoying, threatening, or harassing his wife.

The most recent arrest of a LPD officer involves a 911 Emergency call described by Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department Public Information Officer Kelly Hoover as reporting “a domestic disturbance at a residence in Vandenberg Village”. When SBSD deputies arrived to investigate, they learned that the subject of the report by neighbors was Matthew Lee Hill, a 29-year old member of the Lompoc Police Department. Hill, while off-duty at the time of the alleged incident, was determined by investigating deputies to have perpetrated domestic violence upon his girlfriend, and was arrested without incident.

Hill was subsequently booked into Santa Barbara County Jail on charges of domestic violence with his bail set at $25,000.

For anyone interested in a career in law enforcement, one might reasonably presume that in the not-too-distant future there may be some job openings in Lompoc.

Tax Preparer Swindles Daly City Woman Out of Huge Return

We all feel a little stressed, confused and, yes, even ripped off each year around tax time. It’s why we hire professional tax preparers: To expertly navigate the labyrinth of tax codes and paperwork and get us the best possible returns–or at least limit the amount we owe federal and state governments. However, we don’t expect to be ripped off by the very people we entrust with our sensitive tax and personal information.

Unfortunately, this is exactly what happened to a 63-year-old Daly City resident after a family friend suggested she hire Brian Jeffers to handle her 2013 federal and state tax returns, according to a press release from the Daly City Police Department. The release states that Jeffers, a 43-year-old freelance tax preparer living in Half Moon Bay, swindled the victim out of a whopping $26,873 return!

“She gave her paperwork to Jeffers in early April,” said Sgt. Harold Rolfes of the Daly City Police Department. “When she tried to get a loan through her bank in July, the bank realized there was a problem.”

The woman attempted to contact Jeffers numerous times, but her calls went unanswered, according to police. The Internal Revenue Service got involved. The IRS and the bank discovered that Jeffers had filed the woman’s return, but he switched the return address to his own, forged the woman’s signature on the return check and deposited the check into his own account.

The IRS and the bank turned their evidence over to Daly City Police detectives, who last Thursday tracked Jeffers to his place of employment in Half Moon Bay. Jeffers was arrested without incident and charged with grand theft, forgery and unlawful use of willfully obtained personal identifying information.

Come April, you might want to consider doing your own tax return.

COVELO, MENDOCINO COUNTY – It was Monday afternoon about 3 o’clock when the couple were driving through Covelo. the town they both live in. Covelo is a small town in north east Mendocino County, just south of the Round Valley Indian Tribes reservation, and is home to the tribal center and Hidden Oaks Casino. 19-year-old Harlan Nelson-Hawk Williams and 26-year-old June Elizabeth Anderson, both of Native American descent, were in a car with a broken front windshield, and Harlan was driving recklessly, according to a Mendocino Sheriff’s deputy.

Williams and Anderson booking photos.

Williams and Anderson booking photos.

The problem was, Anderson had been arrested in Willits just a couple of weeks ago, on October 4, and charged with possession of methamphetamine and being under the influence, and she was carrying some meth and paraphernalia for smoking or injecting meth. And Williams was under felony probation for criminal threats, with an “obey all laws” clause – plus he had a warrant out for a probation violation. He had been arrested in Willits last year for exhibiting a deadly weapon.

Both also had connections to Lake County, just east of Mendocino. Williams was arrested there in March on an outstanding warrant from Mendocino for probation violations, along with possession of drug paraphernalia. He was residing in Lakeport at the time. Anderson was living in Nice, along the north shore of Clear Lake, in 2012 when arrested for driving without a license or a seatbelt.

The pair were chased at speeds up to 70 mph through the small town (Greely and Main).

The pair were chased at speeds up to 70 mph through the small town (Greely and Main).

When the deputy initiated a traffic stop by turning on the lights and siren, Williams decided to run for it. He accelerated to 70 miles per hour in the 25 mph zone, and then turned on to Greely Street, a narrow two lane road. He was headed at high speed in the wrong lane, took a quick right at Main Street and another left on Howard, all the while traveling at 60 to 70 mph through the mix of residential and commercial streets with 25 mph limits. The deputy continued in cautious pursuit as the car headed down Howard Street towards Round Valley Elementary School,  turned on Airport Road, and finally crashed through a fence at an open field.

Williams jumped out of the car, leaving Anderson behind. He made a run for it, but was soon captured by a Covelo Tribal Police officer, who had come to assist. The couple were both arrested at the scene and booked into the Mendocino County jail. Williams was charged with evading a peace officer with reckless driving, probation violation, and his outstanding warrant. He was held with a no-bail status. Anderson was charged with possession of a controlled substance and paraphernalia, with her bail set at $10,000.

A suspected shoplifter in Roseville was ultimately arrested for not just that, but drug sales as well, according to a weekly crime report issued by the Roseville Police Department.

Gabriel Carlos Lopez, 37, of Sacramento was reportedly arrested on suspicion of burglary (entering the store with the intention of stealing), transportation of drugs for sale, and other related charges.

According to Roseville PD, on Friday, October 24, at about 8:40 pm, a suspected shoplifter — later identified as Lopez — ran out of a store at the Westfield Galleria at Roseville with stolen merchandise, and then drove away. A Roseville PD officer reportedly saw the suspect’s vehicle getting on to the freeway and eventually stopped the driver after he exited the freeway at Antelope Road.

The driver was reportedly on probation and a search of his vehicle uncovered stolen clothing from the mall store and from other yet to be identified stores. Additionally, officers reportedly found heroin, methamphetamine, marijuana, and evidence of drug sales.

Lopez has had a busy year. He was arrested in January 7 for burglary, possession of burglary tools, conspiracy, and possession of a narcotic controlled substance and paraphernalia. That was followed by a petty theft charge in June, and another drug offense in September.

SAN JOSE – A 1995 Blue Honda Accord was stolen from a parking area in the neighborhood of Tallahassee and Amador Drives in East San Jose. 23-year-old Jorge Luis Ibarez, who had stolen the car, was found to have already been booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail on PC 187, murder – when they filed charges for vehicle theft against him for the incident that occurred on June 1, 2013.

Ibarez is accused of stealing a car from this neighborhood.

Ibarez is accused of stealing a car from this neighborhood.

On June 19, 2013 the San Jose Police Department received a 911 call reporting that a person had been shot near the 1600 block of Virginia Avenue in San Jose. SJPD Homicide Detectives identified Ibarez as a gang member who was involved in the deadly attack on a teen who had been brutally beaten, and then shot in the head by another gang member at the scene.

Homicide Commander Lt. Mike Kihmm said, “After several months of conducting many interviews by our Homicide detectives, I am proud to say they were able to solve this case. Also, it is six less gang members off the streets causing fear to our communities in San Jose. I also want to commend our Covert Response Unit (CRU) and the United States Marshal’s office for assisting us in the apprehension efforts of these suspects.”
Ibarez was arrested on October 22, 2013 for participation in a criminal street gang that killed the unarmed 16-year-old boy, Manuel Urzoua of San Jose.

Meanwhile, the female automobile theft victim reported to police that she had no idea who may have stolen her car. However, the Regional Auto Theft Task Force was able to collect evidence identifying Ibarez as the person responsible for the theft. According to police records, a check on fingerprints lifted from the stolen vehicle’s door handle on 8/21/2013 matched the middle finger impression of Ibarez’s left hand. The finger print analysis confirmed several prints found in and around the vehicle determined that Ibarez had been the last one to use the vehicle.

RATTF investigators asked the female victim if she knew Ibarez but she only replied “No”. When asked if she wanted to press criminal charges, she told officers, “Yes” that she wanted to press charges against him for the theft. The next court hearing for the auto theft charge will be held on November 11, 2014 at 8:30 am in Dept. 35.

PALM DESERT – A driver high on marijuana blocked traffic, attempted to drive away from police, and was ultimately arrested and charged.

A vehicle blocking traffic caught the attention of a police officer Sunday at 4:00 in the afternoon. The 2010 Chrysler 3000 was stopped in the area of Washington Street, north of Avenue of the States in the city of Palm Desert where it was sitting in the #2 southbound traffic lane of Washington Street.

In an attempt to alert oncoming traffic of the impending hazard, the officer pulled up behind the vehicle and turned on his warning lights. When the officer approached the vehicle to assess the situation, he noticed that the driver was acting oddly. The man behind the wheel seemed disoriented and was reportedly somewhat unresponsive to the officer’s questions.

The fire department was called to respond in case the driver was suffering from a medical emergency. Waiting for emergency medical personnel to arrive, the officer remained with the vehicle and noted that there was a strong scent of marijuana emanating from within the Chrysler.

Assessing that the driver might be under the influence, the officer reached inside the vehicle to turn off the ignition. As the officer reached for the keys, the driver suddenly accelerated, stopping a short distance away. The officer ran after the vehicle and both the driver and the passenger jumped out of the car.

According to a press release from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office, the officer was concerned about the driver’s state of mind and uncertain if either of the men were armed. Concerned for his own safety and that of the public, the officer ordered both men to get on the ground at gunpoint and requested assistance.

The driver, Michael Jude Jean-Baptiste , 26 of La Quinta, complied and lay on the ground. However the passenger had other plans. Alex Espinoza Natividad , 29 of Indio, refused to comply. With the arrival of additional deputies, both subjects were subdued and detained.

Nativadad was ultimately released from the scene despite his failure to initially cooperate. Jean-Baptiste was arrested for driving while impaired by drugs (Vehicle Code Section 23152(e) and booked at the Riverside County jail in Indio.

According to Roseville PD, at 1:02 am this morning, Friday, October 31, officers responded to a report of a burglary of an occupied home at 700 Vallejo Avenue. A man had reportedly broken into someone’s apartment while the resident was home, took their car keys, and drove away in their car — a white VW Beetle. Responding officers saw the stolen car as it was being driven away, and the suspect driver reportedly aimed the car at an officer. The officer fired shots at the car, but it is unknown as this time if the suspect was injured.

A short time later, officers reportedly found the stolen vehicle abandoned nearby at Sawtell Road and Hemphill Way. The officers began a thorough and lengthy search of the neighborhood, assisted by the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department, the Citrus Heights Police Department, the Rocklin Police Department and the California Highway Patrol.

At this time, officers are reportedly no longer actively searching the neighborhood, but through the investigation they were able to positively identify the suspect as Daniel Rosario. Anyone who has any information on Rosario’s whereabouts, or any other information that could help, is asked to call Roseville Crime Stoppers at (916)783-7867.

SACRAMENTO—Police have arrested a 20-year-old man in the shooting death of an Oakland mother of four in a possible road rage incident.

Carl Stephen Dubose of Oakland was taken into custody on Wednesday, October 29 at a residence in the 6900 block of March Way in Elk Grove after police reviewed surveillance video and tips from the community.

Dubose is suspected in the shooting death of Perla Avina, 30, of Oakland. She was a passenger in a car on 98th Avenue in Oakland at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 26 when she was shot in the head.  She died in her driveway as her husband attempted to revive her.

Avina, 30, a mother of four, was returning home from grocery shopping with her husband when another driver took issue with the way her husband was driving and fired shots into the couple’s car.

Oakland police called Elk Grove police at about 2:45 p.m. on October 30 after finding out that the suspected shooter was in the Elk Grove home, where he was arrested.

SWAT officers, a hostage negotiation team and other officers converged on the residence occupied by adults and children. Everyone exited peacefully, Elk Grove police officer Christopher Trim said.

Dubose was later transferred to Oakland police custody and taken to the Bay Area.

Oakland Officer Frank Bonifacio said police believe they have recovered the gun used in the shooting and the car driven by Dubose. He also said that investigators are still trying to sort out why Dubose came to the Sacramento area.

“Carl Dubose, the only person we believe responsible for Perla Avina’s death, is now in custody awaiting formal charges,” Bonifacio said. “He has been arrested for her homicide.”

Police said Dubose and Avina did not know each before the shooting. Police are still looking into the road rage allegations, describing it as combination of “complex factors.”

A multi-agency collaborative effort to shut down prostitution and human trafficking resulted in the arrests of 37 suspects.

The agencies involved in the sting operation were the San Luis Obispo, Pismo Beach and Arroyo Grande police departments. The operation targeted illegal activities that have increased in the cities’ local hotels and motels. Officers used the internet and mobile communications to solicit the services of prostitutes.

According to the press release from the SLOPD, many under-aged females are used by pimps to engage in sex acts. Often these under-aged females are held against their will and are coerced into services through force, fear, drugs and retaliation.

The three departments worked together for a three-night operation that targeted the prostitution industry. They used both male and female undercover police officers to identify and arrest prostitutes and their customers, commonly referred to as “Johns”. Many of the prostitutes arrested were from out of town while some of the Johns were local.
