BAKERSFIELD — Three Bakersfield men were arrested on Monday for allegedly stealing nearly a quarter of million dollars in copper and aluminum.
Cody King, 26, 26-year-old Danell Green and 37-year-old Gary Holder, all from Bakersfield, were booked into the Kern County Jail on Sept. 29, for various theft related charges including possession of copper material, grand theft and conspiracy.

According to Bakersfield Police Department Public Information Officer Sergeant Joe Grubbs, the trio was taken into custody concluding a several-month investigation by BPD detectives into the serial thefts of air conditioning condensers and piping from atop various commercial buildings in the Bakersfield area.

Grubbs also said that the investigation led to the identity of all three suspects who allegedly are responsible for at least fifteen of the thefts, totaling over $200,000. Police also said they located 377 pounds of aluminum condensers and 39 pounds of copper piping.

Ventura County - When it comes to the appreciation of the fine arts, it’s often said that “there is no accounting for people’s tastes”. Never does that appear to have been more true than in the case of Brian Nissen, 29, and Laura Guziak, 31, both residents of Thousand Oaks.

Laura Guziak

Laura Guziak

Nissen and Guziak were both arrested on the morning of September 24th on a flurry of criminal charges emanating from their obvious obsessive-compulsive need to steal decorative landscaping ornaments and lighting systems…and support an insidious drug habit. Over the prior several months, the couple is suspected of conducting more than 100 thefts of (one can only imagine) plaster critters, elves, and religious iconography throughout the Thousand Oaks area.

According to Ventura County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Sgt. Jason Robarts, “the crimes took place in the middle of the night and the suspects were reselling the property at area swap meets.” With Thousand Oaks Police detectives receiving multiple reports of stolen lawn statues, in August they issued a press release seeking any information from the public regarding these crimes, and the anonymous tips began to flow.

Brian Nissen

Brian Nissen

So specific was some of the information received by detectives that a search warrant of Nissen’s residence was obtained and served on September 24th, yielding a cache of more than 70 decorative lawn ornaments, various Malibu lighting accessories, an undisclosed amount of methamphetamine and “a large amount of cash”…leading, perhaps to the conclusion that Nissen and Guziak’s “taste in art” wasn’t so far off the commercial mark.

Both Nissen and Guziak were arrested pursuant to the search, transported to Ventura County Jail, and booked on charges of grand theft, conspiracy, possession of stolen property, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of a controlled substance.

Daniel Springsguth has been around. He is apparently originally from the San Diego area, where in August of 2012 and January of 2013 he was arrested on charges being under the influence of a controlled substance, and then again for failure to appear at his court hearing. His most recent residence of record is a house in Martinez, in Contra Costa County northeast of Oakland. However he was arrested Sunday morning, September 28, in the wooded hills of Mendocino County.

Deputies were called at 3 am to a home along Reeves Canyon Road outside of Redwood Valley. The town of Redwood Valley is a sparsely populated community of under 2000 people that lies along the 101 Highway in the Ukiah Valley in inland Mendocino County. It’s about halfway between Willits and Ukiah, near Lake Mendocino. Reeves Canyon Road runs north and west out of Redwood Valley into the forested hills of the Mendocino Coastal Range.

According to the Sheriff’s office, deputies responding to the call for help found a woman stating that her boyfriend, Daniel Edward Springsguth, 31, and she had been in an argument. She said that while they fought, he had elbowed her in the face, injuring her eye. She needed medical treatment for the wound.

She stated that she and Springsguth were living together, but whether they both lived in Martinez, or he had moved to this location in Redwood Valley with her was not clear. In any case, he was arrested and booked into the Mendocino County jail on charges of felony domestic violence battery. He was also charged with being under the influence of a controlled substance. His bail was set at $25,000.

Victim Sleeps Through Burglary

Suspect Picked Up the Intoxicated Victim

SANTA CRUZ—The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office is looking for a ‘Bad Samaritan’ who helped an intoxicated man find his way home, then burglarized the house while the 66-year-old victim slept.  They are looking for a 20-year-old Hispanic male who was wearing black shorts, and a white t-shirt with black shoes and white socks.

The victim told Sheriff’s Deputies that about 6:40 pm last Sunday he was intoxicated and attempted to walk home. When he reached Sunny Cove Drive he realized that he was too drunk to walk and decided to flag down a passing vehicle and ask for a ride.

A short while later, a late model dark colored import with a single male driver, and a girl toddler, likely his daughter, stopped to help the victim. They gave him a ride home and helped him to the door. They even helped him get ready for bed. The so-called ‘Bad Samaritan’ even went as far as to wait inside the home while the victim fell asleep. Then, with the elderly victim asleep, he had free range of the house and was able to load his vehicle with numerous items.

The suspect took two large screens televisions, some furniture, a laptop computer and golf clubs. He even took two suits and a tuxedo from the man’s closet all over a period of four hours that he was in the house.

The suspect did make an attempt to conceal his identity by wiping his fingerprints from the door handle, but he showed complete disregard for the surveillance camera that was outside the door. At one point he even looked up at the camera while he leaving. He did however close the door behind him.

The public should be careful when getting rides to anyone you don’t know.” Santa Cruz Count Sheriff Sergeant Kelly Kent said, “In this case he should have called a cab, as he was only a few blocks way from his house.”

The Santa Cruz County Sheriff Office is now looking for the burglar, and requests that anyone with any information regarding the identity of the suspect or the toddler to please call the Sheriff’s Office at (831) 471 -1121.

Jury: Daniel Marsh Was Sane While Committing Savage Murders

A Yolo County jury returned to the courtroom on Monday, September 29, to hear statements from prosecutors and Daniel Marsh’s attorney related to his state of mind while stabbing to death a prominent Davis couple in their bed. After deliberating about an hour yesterday morning, the jury comprised of four men and eight women found Marsh was sane when he murdered Claudia Maupin, 76, and Oliver “Chip” Northup, 87, and mutilated their bodies on the night of April 13, 2013.

The jury’s verdict means Marsh, now 17, will serve 52 years to life in state prison, the sentence to begin on his 18th birthday.

Marsh’s attorney, Public Defender Ron Johnson, had argued and called experts to testify that Marsh was in a “dissociative” mental state during the killings. Johnson tried to convince the jurors that Marsh’s mind was “invaded” by homicidal thoughts caused by prescription antidepressant drugs the teen was taking around the time of the murders. Thus, Johnson concluded, the antidepressant drugs had altered Marsh’s brain chemistry. Johnson also reiterated what he called a significant clue to Marsh’s mental state: he decided to tell two friends about the murders the next day after he had committed them. The murders were thus not real to him; he had been acting in a “dream state” while he committed them.

The jury did not buy these arguments. Instead the jurors agreed with crucial points Deputy District Attorney Amanda Zambor made during her brief remarks, which she prefaced by thanking the jurors for their efforts during the month-long trial. “Heinous crime does not equal insane,” Zambor stated. “Mental illness does not equal insane.”

“I wanted to make sure the community was safe after this trial was over, and I believe that we’ve now done that,” Assistant Chief Deputy District Attorney Michael Cabral said at a news conference.

“I wanted to make sure the community was safe after this trial was over, and I believe that we’ve now done that,” Assistant Chief Deputy District Attorney Michael Cabral said at a news conference.

Zambor did agree Marsh was afflicted with severe emotional problems. However, she said there was no evidence of psychosis, delusions or a “dissociative state.” Johnson’s defense had been based on the use of these terms to define Marsh’s mental state. Just the fact that he had meticulously planned the murders–down to wrapping duct tape around the soles of his shoes to foil police criminalistics experts investigating the crime scene—proved he was organized and his mind was engaged with the reality of what he was doing.

A date for the hearing at which the court will pronounce sentence on Marsh has yet to be scheduled.

TEMECULA- On Monday, Sheriff’s Investigators arrested three students in a reported shooting threat.

Saturday, September 27, Lake Elsinore Police Department received a tip from the community that there was shooting planned on Monday at Temescal Canyon High School. The information originated from a student who overheard a conversation regarding the shooting. The person reporting this allegedly planned incident to the authorities had no other information to share. The police department informed school officials and made arrangements to send additional officers to campus that day.

Beginning Sunday morning, more calls come into the department from concerned parents as students shared the story of the impending shooting. Numerous comments regarding this planned crime were also shared over social media. Authorities received additional information regarding the source of the information. The police department continued to investigate the reports and conversations throughout the evening and early morning hours.

Santa Rosa predator caught in sting

Can a message from a 25-year-old man to a 15-year-old girl he doesn’t know ever be innocent? It may have seemed that way at first to the girl who got a message on her Facebook account from Edel Cruz in late August.

One morning the teenager received this message and replied, perhaps curious over who he was and if she in fact knew him. The Santa Rosa Police reported that the two carried on a brief on-line conversation. Cruz told her he was 21, and she told him she was 15. The messages between them were all considered non-offensive, and the girl finally relied that she needed to stop messaging.

send message

Later that afternoon, Cruz re-initiated the conversation, and she again replied, but perhaps realizing she did not know who he was, she stopped responding. Cruz, however, did not give up, and sent her more messages that evening, but this time he sent her a lewd photo, several vulgar texts, and another explicit picture. The girl immediately alerted her parents, and they contacted Santa Rosa police to report the incident. A detective from the Domestic Violence Sexual Assault Investigations Team was assigned to the case.

The detective initiated a common plan to catch suspected predators. He began sending messages to Cruz from a dummy account, posing as a 13-year-old girl. Cruz took the bait, and over the next few weeks, he communicated with the fictitious girl, and began to ask her for photos. Like he had done previously, he started sending lewd photos and messages, including explicit instructions to the young teen on how to engage in certain sexual acts, and gave her a link to a pornographic website he wanted her to check out. He finally tried to arrange a meeting with her to engage in sexual relations. The detective posing as the girl readily agreed to meet him.

The meeting was arranged for Friday, September 26 at 3:30 pm, after school was out. She was to meet him near his apartment, near Aston Avenue and Petaluma Hill Road. He showed up, but instead of getting together with his intended target, he was met by Santa Rosa PD detectives. He was arrested and placed into custody, and his computer tablet was also seized as evidence. It will be examined to determine if other minors have been targeted, or even molested by him in the past.

Edel Cruz, also known as Faustino Edel Cruz-Melo, was booked at the Sonoma County Jail on charges of attempted lewd or lascivious acts with a child under 14, two counts of sending harmful matter with intent of seduction to a minor, and two counts of arranging a meeting with a minor for exploitation. Bail was set at $100,000.00.

Detectives wish to remind parents that they should check what their children are doing while online, and talk to them about online safety. Providing children with unrestricted access to the internet and social media without checking to make sure they are safe can cause many problems. Predators are out there and this case is an example of how they manipulate and exploit children. Anyone who feels they may have been victimized by this man, or anyone else, is encouraged to contact police as soon as possible.

Ventura County - Throughout the latter part of the summer, the Ventura County Interagency Pharmaceutical Crimes Unit—involving law enforcement personnel drawn from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department, the Simi Valley Police Department, the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office Bureau of Investigation, and the California Highway Patrol—has been actively pursuing leads into those individuals behind increased use and sales of cocaine and a marked uptick in arrests attendant to those drug violations.

According to Ventura County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Sgt. Victor Fazio, the IPC Unit, with the objective of “combatting the transfer of legal prescription medication to the illegal market” and of “identifying and stopping emerging drug trends” in the youth population, aggressively investigated all possible leads emanating from that recent flurry of arrests and determined that Marco Cuevas, a 31-year old resident of Sylmar was a key figure behind it all.

Cuevas was placed under law enforcement surveillance and on September 26th he was observed in the city of Moorpark engaged in the act of selling cocaine to a buyer from Ventura County. When contacted, Cuevas was found to be carrying “several ounces of cocaine” on him, and when deputies searched his vehicle—occupied by his wife Sandy Cuevas, 29, and their 5-year old son (who later tested positive for cocaine in his system)—another half pound of coke and more than $10,000 cash were discovered.

Pursuant to the evidence found in Cuevas’ car, a warrant for the search of their residence was served later in the day whereupon additional “evidence of drug sales, several pounds of marijuana, hundreds of pills of prescription drugs, $75,000 in cash, 16 guns, and nearly 3000 rounds of ammunition” were discovered.

Marcos and Sandy were both arrested and booked into Ventura County Jail on various charges, including possession for sale of cocaine, conspiracy to sell cocaine, child endangerment, and multiple weapons violations, with his bail set at a cool $1,000,000.

Young man from Ukiah caught in late night Mendocino burglary

MENDOCINO – It was late Sunday night when Ukiah resident Bret Counterman was lurking in a Mendocino neighborhood on Pine Street, not far from the Headlands State Park and Mendocino High School. He had parked his car, doing his best to conceal it from view, as it had false registration tabs, and he was up to no good anyway.

Counterman parked his car on Pine Street in Mendocino.

Counterman parked his car on Pine Street in Mendocino.

But Sheriff’s Deputies were in the area, keeping an eye out for suspicious circumstances. They had received several recent reports of thefts from unlocked vehicles, gasoline siphoned from cars, and residential burglaries as well. According to a Sheriff’s press release, this prompted them to increase their patrols in the village. It was already past 1 am when they spotted the car, parked in such a way as to make it look like it was being hidden from suspicious eyes. They noted the invalid registration tabs, and kept an eye out in the area.

About a half hour later they observed the same car, now being driven from the area, and stopped it. The driver was of course 21-year-old Bret Allen Counterman. As they spoke with him, the deputies noticed a fuel can and siphon hose in the car, making him an immediate suspect in the burglaries they were investigating.

They ended up finding property from ten recently reported thefts with Counterman, and additional items that they suspected had also been stolen, but not yet reported. He was arrested for seven counts of petty theft, two counts of burglary, from both vehicles and homes, as well as a failure to appear warrant. He was booked into Mendocino County Jail with a total bail amount of $17,500.00.

Santa Barbara - Among the Top Ten Rules for Successful Thievery, one would think that “don’t steal in your own neighborhood” might rank high on the list. Apparently, that fundamental tenet escaped the educational experience of 22-year old Cody Clark, a resident of Santa Barbara’s stylishly rustic Mission Canyon, within a stone’s throw of the city’s historic Mission itself.

Surveillance pic showing Clark in action

Surveillance pic showing Clark in action

According to Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Department Public Information Officer Kelly Hoover’s recently released report to the media, over the past four months the tony residential neighborhood has been the target of numerous home and auto burglaries. Because of vigilant homeowners in the area and an active Neighborhood Watch program, citizens were able to conduct surveillance on their own and to ultimately provide law enforcement “with videos and photos” identifying Clark as the principle suspect.

With that information and a warrant for the search of his residence in hand, Clark was contacted at home on September 12th whereupon Sheriff’s detectives discovered “more than 50 pieces of stolen property including jewelry, computer components, cell phones, cameras, wallets, and a bicycle.” Further investigation established that Clark had perpetrated his series of thefts during the darkness of night, specifically targeting unlocked motor vehicles, all within close proximity to his own place of residence.

Clark was arrested and booked into Santa Barbara County Jail on charges of grand theft and possession of stolen property.

Two men are in custody after San Luis Obispo Police responded to a report of a burglary alarm at the SLO Elks Lodge #322 located at 222 Elks Lane.

According to SLOPD, they received the call around 4:08 a.m. Wednesday. When officers arrived on the scene, they noticed a flashlight moving around within the business.

His bail was set at $20,000.

While at the scene of the burglary, officers discovered a person sitting in the car on the Elks Lodge property. During the police contact, officers checked for warrants on the suspect who was identified as Brandon Foster, 29, of SLO. Foster had outstanding warrants and was taken into custody.

Investigators discovered Foster was a former Elks Lodge member. Police are still investigating his involvement with the burglary. Foster was transported to county jail for five warrants with bail totaling $50,000.

Community Service Officer Helps Catch Stolen Car Thief

Officer Spotted Suspect Driving Erratically

SALINAS—Who says that Community Service Officers have a boring job?  Not the officers associated with the City of Salinas Police Department. A Community Service Officer used her intuition and helped get a car thief off the streets.

On Monday, about 11:17 am, a Community Service Officer observed a green Honda Accord traveling eastbound on East Alisal Street near John Street. The driver began driving erratically once he became aware of the officer behind him.

The Community Service Officer called for a Police officer to respond, while still observing the vehicle. The Driver, identified as 21-year-old Delfino Diaz, drove the car to the 100 block of Summer Street where he parked and abandoned it.

Diaz, who thought he could get away, ran for a short distance before meeting up with one of Salinas’ Finest. The officer was able to take him into custody without incident.

“The Community Service Officers play an important role in what we do as Police Officers.” Salinas Police Commander Henry Gomez said, “They help us out by taking the work from us, which in turn gives us time to do other important work in the city, like investigations.”

You might be wondering, why would Diaz leave a perfectly good car behind? Well, it had been reported stolen and few weeks earlier out of the Monterey County California Highway Patrol’s jurisdiction.

Diaz was arrested and transported to Monterey County Jail and booked on possession of a stolen vehicle. And if that was not enough, he was even driving with an open container of alcohol in the vehicle and on a suspended license, and charged for both. And he had been arrested just a few weeks before – on September 3, for possession of a controlled substance.

$5 million Bail for Serial Child Molester

Santa Barbara - Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department Public Information Officer Kelly Hoover recently reported to the media details of the September 10th arrest of Joseph Michael Hyde, a 63-year old resident of the City of Santa Barbara.

Hyde became the subject of intense law enforcement scrutiny as early as July 2014 at which time, according to Hoover, “Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s detectives, along with detectives from the Santa Barbara Police Department initiated an investigation into alleged child molestation.” That investigation indicated that Hyde “may have been molesting several children” over an extended period of time, possibly over multiple decades. Law enforcement authorities believe that he may have perpetrated his crimes against children throughout multiple jurisdictions, ranging from the unincorporated areas of Santa Barbara County to the City of Santa Barbara and to the state of Oregon.

According to Hoover, “the investigation by Sheriff’s detectives revealed five victims” within Santa Barbara County, with the age of his victims at the time of molestation ranging from age two to 14. It is further believed that Hyde was personally acquainted with each of his victims at the time of his illegal physical contact with them.

Hyde remains in custody at Santa Barbara County Jail with his bail set at $5,000,000

Because of the extended range and time period of Hyde’s alleged activities, detectives suspect that additional victims may exist, and they are urged to contact the Sheriff’s Criminal Investigations Division by calling (805) 681-4150.

VISALIA – A man was may face criminal charges for allegedly pointing a green laser light at a Tulare County Sheriff’s Office patrol aircraft and hitting both the pilot and a flight officer in the eye.

The patrol aircraft was heading to a petty theft call north of Visalia on Wednesday around 8 p.m. when it was struck with a green laser. The pilot and officer were both hit in the eye.

The flight officer was able to use the aircraft camera system to determine that the laser light originated in the backyard of a residence in the 4000 block of W. Damsen Lane in Visalia.

The sheriff’s office contacted the Visalia Police Department, which quickly sent two officers to investigate. The officers identified the suspect as 40-year-old Brian Pennington, who had possession of the green laser.

Pennington was questioned and released by the officers. The investigation will be forwarded to the District Attorney for the possible filing of criminal charges against Pennington.

Ventura - The hazards of being out of touch with contemporary pop culture was demonstrated on the morning of September 24th as Ventura Police Department officers responded to “a report of a wanted subject” made by an area neighborhood citizen.

According to the VPD media report, when the officers arrived on the scene, they spotted an individual “who matched the description of the wanted subject” and then made an attempt at personal greeting in their customary fashion. Apparently, their cordial attempt to establish communication with 34-year old Ventura resident Jesus Arreola failed to convince him that this was likely to become an opportunity to enjoy the benefits of the community policing outreach a la “coffee with a cop”, and he reacted by summarily swinging his backpack at one of the officers.

At that point Arreola turned tail and sprinted for parts unknown, leaping fences and dashing through a series of neighborhood backyards. Arreola, perhaps somewhat gifted as a track-and-field hurdler, manage to elude his pursuers who somehow lost sight of their prey. Clearly oblivious to the eventual outcome of such events as commonly portrayed on every TV cop show since “Starsky and Hutch”, Arreola soon found himself boxed in as VPD quickly established a secure perimeter and began to tighten the noose.

It was at this time that the local area elementary school was placed on security lockdown until Arreola could be tracked down and taken into custody some 20 minutes later. Having suffered what was described as “minor injuries he sustained during the foot pursuit”, Arreola was treated by Ventura City Fire personnel on the scene, at which time all involved parties realized that Arreola was not the man police were initially seeking.

If only Arreola had been a fan of movie musicals, he might have remembered an instructive lyric from West Side Story’s “Cool”: Gotta rocket in your pocket, keep cool, boy! Perhaps completely unaware of that good advice, the now-injured Arreola’s unexpected bolting from police contact got him a ride to to Ventura County Jail, where he was booked on multiple felony and midemeanor warrants, resisting arrest, and possession of stolen property.

PETALUMA – According to a press release by the Petaluma Police Department (PPD), an officer was approaching suspicious person(s) in a parked vehicle in the vicinity of Alhambra Court at about 1 am when the suspects then fled, and a vehicle pursuit ensued.

When officers subsequently came upon what turned out to be a stolen vehicle, they found that the driver had fled on foot and had left his girlfriend in the back seat of the car. The woman was arrested for unrelated charges but her identity has not been shared by PPD at this time.

The suspect had avoided contact with officers for almost ten hours. They were continuing the investigation when at approximately 10:45 am, during a search and the setup of a perimeter of a home in the vicinity of the 1200 block of Ramona Lane, the suspect jumped over a sound wall onto Caulfield Lane.

Shortly thereafter the suspect was contacted by two motor officers and two detectives, and arrested for felony evading in a vehicle, possession of a stolen vehicle and violation of probation.

The suspect is 29-year-old Stewart Giovanni Borondy of Petaluma who was booked into Sonoma County Jail. The vehicle was returned to the registered owner. No stranger to the back of a squad car, Bordondy has been arrested several times this year on charges of vandalism, narcotics possession, and probation violations. Records also show a DUI in 2013, and a DUI with an open container in 2009.
