Man Arrested for Oilfield Theft

TAFT — Officers from the Kern County Rural Crime Investigation Unit said they have arrested a suspect accused of stealing from an oilfield in Taft.

The suspect, Russell Jones, 34, was booked into the Taft Jail for possession of stolen property and petty theft after deputies identified Jones from surveillance photos taken by employees of Venoco Inc.
According to police, witnesses said they saw Jones steal an air compressor from one of their oilfield sites on Aug. 26, and took pictures of the incident while it was occurring.

The photographs of the Jones stealing the compressor were distributed to several oilfield related employers in the Taft area, who immediately, identified Jones leading deputies to his whereabouts.

Jones was taken into custody a short time later on Aug. 28, by officers from the Office Rural Crime Investigation Unit along withTaft Police and parole agents from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

The compressor was recovered and returned to Venoco.
