WASCO — A 26-year-old man accused of stealing a vehicle was arrested Monday morning after taking a hostage and leading police on two car chases.
Luis Patricio Pedroza was taken into custody by deputies from the Kern County Sheriff’s Office and booked into the Kern County Jail for two counts of felony evading, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon on a person, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, carjacking, two counts of attempt carjacking, kidnapping, four counts of false imprisonment, two counts of resisting arrest, burglary, auto theft, home invasion robbery and kidnapping during the commission of a home invasion robbery.
According to a sheriff’s press release, deputies spotted a Pedroza driving a stolen vehicle around 4 a.m. on August 19, and gave chase along with police units from the McFarland Police Department.
When deputies tried to stop the stolen vehicle, Pedroza, refused to yield, smashing into a McFarland police car.
The chase eventually ended on a Highway 99 frontage road after the vehicle Pedroza was driving became disabled on the center median of the highway.
Deputies said Pedroza then exited the vehicle and broke into a into a residence in the 400 block of Industrial Street in McFarland where he held a woman at knifepoint.
Pedroza then exited the home, ramming a pair patrol vehicle several times, as he drove away holding the woman hostage before tossing her from the moving car.
A second vehicle pursuit ensued, but deputies stopped Pedroza, chasing him on foot under a highway underpass where he resisted violently before being taken into custody.
“Tasers were used and a McFarland Police K-9 was deployed,” said sheriff’s spokesperson Ray Pruitt. “Two officers sustained minor injuries during the incident.”
Pedroza was transported to Kern Medical Center for treatment and then released.
