Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department detectives have arrested a suspect for the March 2012 murder of Rosemont resident 13-year-old Jessica Funk-Haslam, according to an official press release.

Ryan Douglas Roberts, 23, of Sacramento, was reportedly booked into the Sacramento County Mail Jail the morning of Thursday, August 8, 2013, on a charge of murder, and is currently being held without bail.
On March 6, 2012, at approximately 6:30am, Sheriff’s deputies reportedly responded to Rosemont Community Park in eastern Sacramento County as a body had been discovered by a woman walking through the park. The victim — later identified as Funk-Haslam — was located in the dugout of a baseball field. It was later determined she had reportedly died from a combination of asphyxia, blunt force trauma and a puncture wound to the neck.
Detectives reportedly commended an investigation that involved extensive neighborhood canvasses, interviews of hundreds of people, and the analysis of evidence collected from the scene. Despite these efforts, the case remained unsolved for 17 months.

Then on August 7, 2013, detectives were informed a recently arrested man — Roberts — had a DNA sample that reportedly matched the profile left on evidence at the crime scene. Investigators reportedly worked in cooperation with the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office and later that day officers reportedly made contact with, interviewed and ultimately arrested Roberts in connection to the case.
According to the Sheriff’s Department, the investigation remains ongoing, however, detectives do not believe there were any other suspects other than Roberts involve. Anyone having information pertinent to this case is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau at 916-874-5115.
