Police officers in Highland made a shocking discovery when they pulled over a couple late Sunday night.
Witnesses at a local drive-thru had reported seeing a child in the trunk of the vehicle the couple was driving around 11 p.m. of Sunday night.
Officers were able to track the car and pulled the car over at the intersection of Baseline Street and Palm Avenue as the vehicle attempted to make a U-turn. As officers walked to the driver’s window, an immediate smell of alcohol came from the car.
The mother, 32 years-old April Burgo of Escondido, was driving the vehicle at the time. When officers asked her to open the trunk, she became hesitant. The trunk was later opened and found the couple’s two children, an 8 year-old girl and a 6 year-old boy, crying inside the trunk.
April Burgo and her husband, 29 year-old Richard Burgo of Wildomar, were arrested and charged with suspicion of cruelty to a child. Another passenger in the car, 33 years-old Brandon Rampani of Escondido, was also arrested.
All three suspects were able to post bail. The children are now in the care of a relative.
