An historic home in San Luis Obispo was damaged by what investigators are calling arson.
According to a press release from the San Luis Obispo City Fire Department, firefighters responded to a structure fire at 535 Islay Street around 1:17 a.m. on Thursday morning.
The first arriving unit found a small fire in an exterior wall of the historic 6,000 square-foot three-story residence.
The owner was attempting to extinguish the fire with a garden hose.
By the time the first emergency unit arrived, all five occupants of the home, three adults and two children, had evacuated the house. They were alerted to the fire by the odor of smoke that came through an open skylight.
The remaining fire was quickly extinguished and control was achieved within eight minutes of the initial 911 call.
There were no injuries and the property damage to the structure is estimated at approximately $5,000.
“The fire was intentionally set utilizing combustible materials obtained onsite, which were placed against the exterior of the home,” according to Fire Marshal Roger Maggio.
The residence did have working smoke detectors, according to the fire investigator.
The fire marshal is continuing the criminal investigation with the assistance of SLOPD detectives. Anyone having any information regarding the incident is encouraged to contact the fire marshal at 781-7386.
