On Friday, March 23, 2013, Juan Ramirez is suspected of stabbing to death his ex-girlfriend 29-year-old Sandra Cruzes-Gonsalez.

According to the San Jose Police Department, Cruzes-Gonsalez had a restraining order against Ramirez for domestic violence that had occurred in the past over the course of their relationship.  Family members on Sunday placed a table and a makeshift memorial to remember Cruzes-Gonsalez.  The memorial simply reads, “We Love You”.

Assistant District Attorney Karyn Sinunu-Towery with the Santa Clara County DA’s office said, “The DA’s Office doesn’t tell victims of domestic violence, robbery, burglary or stalking how to protect themselves.” It is believed that Ramirez had been stalking the victim for the last few years after the break-up of their relationship.  Sinunu-Towery said, “The DA’s Office works hard daily to protect victims by obtaining prison/jail sentences and restraining orders.”

It is believed that Ramirez has fled to Mexico.  “If Ramirez is captured in Mexico we would work with the DA’s Office to bring him back for extradition. We are very successful in bringing US citizens back for trial. Ramirez is a US Citizen,” Sinunu-Towery said.

During the attack of the victim, several witnesses at the scene said they thought that Ramirez was beating the woman in the rear area of the parking lot located at 940 N. 1st Street in San Jose.  Cruzes-Gonsalez was stabbed in the arms and neck and has died due to her injuries.  Witnesses reported that Ramirez took off through the parking lot, jumping several fences to escape.  He had apparently parked behind the area near the Union Bank located at 990 N 1st St, and ducked back behind an opening area in the fence line. He escaped to his dark green 1996 Toyota T-100 truck that was parked along North Second Street.  Officers following a blood trail were able to track his movements once he fled the scene.

According to a press release by the San Jose police department, “Multiple patrol and Special Operations METRO officers responded and searched the neighborhood for several hours but did not locate the suspect.”
