According to Roseville PD, on March 15, 2013, someone fishing in Dry Creek near Atkinson Street found human remains near the creek bed. In late June 2013, the Placer County Coroner reportedly identified the deceased person as a Los Angeles County missing person — John Paul Alpert, 19, of Palmdale.

During the investigation, Roseville detectives reportedly learned Alpert had lived at home, helping his parents and attending community college. He had reportedly left Palmdale on March 10, 2013, for a first-time adventure illegally riding the freight train rails. He had reportedly communicated with his family every day until March 17, and then all communications had stopped, and his worried family had reported his missing to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office.

Roseville detectives reportedly determined that Alpert had arrived in Roseville on a freight train between March 16 and 17, where he was killed near a freight train rider’s encampment.

The killing happened near the Roseville Union Pacific railyard.

With the help of Roseville PD’s transient officer, David Flood, detectives reportedly researched the community and lifestyle of cross-country freight train riders, and eventually identified potential suspects, with the investigation leading to the issuance of Placer County arrest warrants for three experienced freight train riders.

Roseville detectives would like to thank the Placer County District Attorney’s Office, Union Pacific Railroad Police Department, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department, the California Department of Justice, the Farmington (New Mexico) Police Department, and the Nebraska City Police Department for their assistance with this case.
