Suspect had Five Pipe Bombs in a Lockbox

MOSS LANDING—The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office has arrested 40-year-old Campbell resident Erik Richard Snyder for possession of five pipe bombs and a firearm.

On Monday, February 17, Monterey County Sheriff’s Deputy S. Moran was patrolling a Moss Landing neighborhood in the early morning hours, when he noticed a recreational vehicle parked on a side of road.  Further investigation of the RV revealed to Deputy Moran that the RV was displaying license plate that belonged to a different vehicle.

After a backup deputy arrived, they both contacted the owner of the RV, who was inside the vehicle.  The man advised the Deputies that the proper papers showing the vehicle’s proper registration were in a lockbox inside the vehicle. The Deputies retrieved the lockbox and opened it.  While searching the lockbox the Deputies found five improvised explosive devices – pipe bombs – along with a loaded revolver.

“The suspect, Erik Richard Snyder, is a convicted felon with an active restraining order.” Monterey County Sheriff’s Officials wrote, “Both these prohibit him from possessing a firearm.”

Snyder changed his Facebook profile on Dec. 28 last year, as perhaps a clue to his state of mind.

The Monterey County Sheriff’s Bomb Squad was called to the scene to evaluate the devices.  They determined that the devices were real.  The Bomb Squad rendered the devices safe shortly thereafter. After an extensive investigation, it was determined that the suspect’s proximity to the Moss Landing Power Plant was determined to be coincidental and without correlation.

Snyder was arrested for possession of the five pipe bombs and the firearm.  He was booked into the Monterey County Jail.
