McFarland — Probation officers conducting a compliance check on probationer got more than they bargained for when they discovered a stash of weapons.
Looking down the 200 block of San Lucas
According to officials from Kern County Probation, officers went to a residence at about 5:20 p.m. on Sept. 16, in the 200 block of San Lucas Street in McFarland, to conduct a search on 24-year-old Stephen Espinoza, who they believed was in possession of a shotgun.
As officers approached the residence, they saw another probationer, 23-year-old Jesse Sanchez, run into tthe house where he fell just inside the doorway and appeared to remove an object from his waistband
Sanchez was immediately apprehended in the back yard of the residence while trying to flee from the officers by climbing over a fence.
“After taking Mr. Sanchez into custody officers went back inside the residence and began a search for Mr. Espinoza who they found hiding in a bedroom closet,” said a probation spokesperson. “When officer’s asked him to show his hands, he refused and he was shot at by an officer who believed he was in possession of a firearm.”
Authorities said the officer fired one round at Espinoza who was not injured and eventually surrendered
With both subjects in custody, officers conducted a search of the residence and located a loaded .22 caliber semi-automatic handgun and a loaded 12-gauge shotgun with a pistol grip, as well as ballistic body armor.
Sanchez was booked at the Kern County Jail for resisting arrest and a probation violation, while Espinoza was booked at the Kern County Jail for possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of ammunition, felon in possession of body armor and resisting arrest.
