POMONA – Twenty-one unsolved murders in 2013 drew a response from law enforcement in recent days. On Saturday, a 17-year-old San Bernardino teen-ager, Deon Christopher Davis, was found shot to death in the 1200 block of Cromwell St. – the 21st unsolved murder in 2013.
Police responded with a task force. A total of 165 arrests, including the seizing of 25 firearms, took place over a three-week long joint operation to reduce gang violence. Local police, along with the United States Marshal Service, took part in the “Operation Triple Beam,” as a means of reducing gang violence.
All of this year’s murders, said Pomona Police Sgt. Hector Rodriguez, are believed to be related to gangs and narcotics. “This operation,” he said, “took the guns out of the hands of would-be killers, drugs and very dangerous people off the streets.”
Police believe that Saturday’s killing of Davis, who was shot multiple times with a handgun, was gang related. Rodriguez said the task force is also working on other possible leads that may help solve some of the murder cases.
Operation Triple Beam was planned to remove “tools of the trade” from gang members, conducting compliance checks on known sex offenders, swarming high crime areas in the city, and to gain information that would lead to arrests of known fugitives who have arrest warrants sworn against them for violent crimes.
Said Pomona Police Chief Dave Keetle: “We will continue to use every tool and partnership available in our effort to combat gang violence in the city.”
