CALEXICO – Following his arrest on Friday March 8, a Calexico teacher entered a plea of not guilty to charges he sexually molested students.

Tommy Obeso

Aurora High School teacher Tommy Obeso, 59 was arrested following a sting operation conducted by the Calexico Police Department and Homeland Security Investigation’s Cyber Crime Unit. Following numerous reports of sexual abuse and inappropriate conduct, officers posing as a fictitious teenage girl on Facebook contacted Obeso through the site. Calexico Police Detective Manuel Ceja stated that once contacted, Obeso made very descriptive sexual advances toward the invented girl and adamantly requested a meeting with the girl for the purposes of sexual intercourse.

Uniformed Calexico officers from the Border Crime Unit and HCI criminal investigators met Obeso at a Forever 21 store in Calexico at around 1 p.m. on Friday. Obeso arrived expecting to meet the girl he had been exchanging messages with on Facebook and was arrested for soliciting a minor for sexual acts. Officers then executed a warrant and gathered computer evidence from his apartment.

Obeso was a teacher at Calexico's Aurora High when he was suspected of inappropriate sexual activity

Obeso taught American government, psychology, and sociology at Aurora High School, where he had been teaching for the last year. Prior to this he had taught world history at Calexico High School for several years. After interviewing current and former female students and encouraging other victims to come forward, police confirmed suspected victims, all of whom were between 16- and 17-years-old. Ceja stated that Obeso allegedly  inappropriately touched, kissed and made sexual advances toward numerous female students.

Obeso was arrested after a meeting was set up at Forever 21, confirming his intentions with the supposed minor girl

The arraignment hearing in Imperial County Jail Court occurred on Tuesday where Obeso faced three counts including arranging and going to meet a minor for sex, sexual battery and sending illicit material to a minor. Obeso pled not guilty to all charges. His bail is set at $250,000 and pretrial and bail review is set for Monday in Imperial County Jail Court.

Shannon Brewer, an online executive officer working in Concord for Wells Fargo Bank, was indicted by a Grand Jury under Title 18, U.S.C., Section 1349 for knowingly committing bank fraud on June 26, 2010. She is accused of using customer information to obtain large amounts of money, exceeding over $214,458.00, from accounts Brewer and others compromised.  Brewer faces charges with the United States Attorney’s Office in the San Jose Federal Court for files formally charged on Feb 27, 2013.  Brewer  is being charged along with co-conspirators with cashing fraudulent checks and compromising account information at a series of Wells Fargo branches and is expected to appear in Court March 14, 2013.

While Brewer was working for Wells Fargo Bank, she had become involved with others who had promised her cash for information leading to obtaining money illegally from Wells Fargo account holders.  Brewer was given $700 with the promise of more.  The two individuals requested her to verify Social Security numbers and confidential customer information in order to withdraw funds from Wells Fargo Bank accounts.

A Wells Fargo Branch in Concord

Brewer, through communications via texting, had responded to several requests involving the identification and verification of information that had led to the withdraw of thousands of dollars, seemingly doubling over time, as account information was shared and verified over a matter of days.  The brazen trio, feeling comfortable in their role to defraud customer accounts, and had begun to withdraw stolen funds daily. The indictment alleges that on “August 9, 2010, “J Jones” texted Brewer MBE’s Social Security number, xxx xx 8657, and having verified the information as “good” the accomplice withdrew $9000 from the account in Phoenix, Arizona.”  The fraud continued for several months in which amounts of $10,000, $2000, $6500 and $3100 had been withdrawn from Wells Fargo Bank customer accounts.

Redding Parolee Arrested for 11th Time

Some lawbreakers never seem to stop. A 30-year-old resident of Redding, Jeremiah Jerry Murphy, seems to be setting his own record of arrests as he was detained for 11th time in the past 10 months on Tuesday, March 12.

Jeremiah Jerry Murphy

According to the Redding Police Department, Murphy has been specializing in escaping from parole and not showing up for his parolee “appointments.” He was most recently arrested on March 10, with the help of a police K-9, for being a parolee and fleeing from patrol officers. RPD released Murphy from jail the next day instructing him to report to his parole officer immediately. As usual, Murphy did not follow the instructions and was nowhere to be found until Tuesday.

On Tuesday evening, the officers received a call notice of Murphy’s whereabouts. They found him taking a walk on California Street near the intersection of Gold Street. Investigators contacted Murphy on his walk and interrupted it with an arrest. He was booked into Shasta County Jail, hopefully for the last time, for being a parolee and failing to appear in court.

Teenage horse thief arrested in Somis

$

Ventura County Sheriffs Deputies arrested a 19-year-old man suspected of stealing five horses, four of them miniature horses.

On Thursday, February 28th, a man who lives on Los Angeles Street in Somis reported that one of his horses was missing. At the time, he was unsure whether the horse had been stolen, or if it gotten loose, and may have been roaming the nearby hillsides.

Miniature horses are about the size of a large dog.

Two weeks later, on Wednesday March 13, the man recognized his horse in a stable on the 1900 block of Lewis Road in nearby Camarillo. He also recognized several other “miniature” horses that belonged to another person, along with two saddles. According to a Ventura County Sheriff press release, deputies responded to the victim’s report, and after an investigation, arrested Oscar Pina, whose residence is listed as Oxnard, but may have been staying in Somis or Camarillo at the time. Somis and Camarillo are towns in the south east part of Ventura County, and are a mix of suburban and rural areas.

Miniature horses are generally about 3 feet tall at the “withers” or shoulder. They are usually friendly and interact well with people, and are often kept as pets, though they still behave more like a full size horse than a dog or other familiar pet. However, they are sometimes trained as service or assistance animals for people with disabilities. They also have long life spans, averaging about 30 years, which makes them valuable once trained, as they can serve for much longer than dogs. However, their instinct is to flee when threatened, as they are by nature a “prey” animal, unlike a dog.

The five horses found at the stable on Lewis Road are valued at over $10,000.00, and the two saddles at more than $1200.00. The horses have all been returned to their owners.

Oscar Pina was booked into Ventura County Main Jail on charges of Felony possession of stolen property pending further investigation of the circumstances of the crime. Anyone with more information is encouraged to call Ventura County Crime Stoppers for eligibility for up to $1,000 reward, at 800-222-TIPS (8477). Callers are able to remain anonymous, and the call is not recorded.

Suspect shot and killed during high speed pursuit

$

A suspect who was spotted by San Jose Metro Unit Officers driving a stolen vehicle was shot and killed during a high speed pursuit that ended in the unincorporated foothills of  East San Jose.

The scene of the shooting is under investigation following the chase

Near the 14000 block of Jerilyn and Athene Drive in unincorporated San Jose, San Jose Metro Police Officers responded with force after being rammed by suspects fleeing in a stolen white two-door Honda.  One officer was forced to fire at the suspect, hitting him in the head.  According to Sgt. Jose Cardoza with the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Department, “Being that the shooting actually occurred outside the city limits in an unincorporated part, the Sheriff’s Department has jurisdiction.” It was later learned that the suspect died due to a single gunshot wound after being treated at a local hospital.

The San Jose Fire Department was on scene with San Jose Police Officers and Sheriff’s Deputies.  The San Jose Fire Department responded to the call with SJPD officers within the smaller pocket of the county located near the East Foothills of unincorporated San Jose.

Police, Sheriffs and Fire Dept units were all present

During the pursuit responding officers were dispatched to two different areas, in a mix-up caused by the separation of radio frequencies.  The mix-up sent officers to the location of Mt Vernon and Mt Shasta Drive. However, the location was quickly verified as unmarked and marked patrol officers pursued the suspect near James Lick High School ending near Jerilyn and Athene Drive.

Isidro Alvarez, a junior at James Lick High School said, “We heard a crash and a gunshot.”  Alvarez said, “We saw a lot of cops, and thought it was some kid from our school, but then we learned it was some guy who got shot.”

“The San Jose Metro Unit was following a suspicious vehicle in the area,” Cardoza said. “The officers received information that the car was stolen prior to trying to stop the vehicle.”

The chase ended where Athene curves into Jerilyn

Officers were following the suspect closely when they came up on a winding turn.  “I saw three vehicles in the chase,” One witness said. The driver of the stolen vehicle crashed into the unmarked officer’s patrol car and a parked car near the turn.  The driver of the stolen vehicle began to accelerate at a high rate of speed toward one officer who had exited his vehicle. The officer, in fear for his safety, fired a single shot at the suspect, ending the pursuit.

A second person was with the driver during the incident.  However he is not being considered a suspect by investigating officers.

Man Shot, Killed at San Bernardino Apartment

SAN BERNARDINO – Police say a man shot multiple times in the upper body on Monday night died from his gunshot wounds.

Lavender was shot as the vehicle pulled into apartments on North Loma Ave.

Semaj Jamesz Lavender, 18, was riding as a passenger in a vehicle just before 5 p.m., pulling into a gated apartment complex on the 2900 block of North Loma Avenue, when gunshots were heard. The driver of the vehicle fled, not realizing Lavender had been shot until moments later.

Police did not identify the driver who drove the injured man to St. Bernardine’s Medical Center, which was located a few miles of the shooting scene at 2101 North Waterman Ave. Lavender died a short time after arriving at the hospital.

Lt. Paul Williams said in a release that police, who don’t have any suspects, are uncertain if the shooting was gang or drug related. There has yet to be a motive for the shooting as well, he said. The neighborhood, according to police, has gang-related ties. Williams said the San Bernardino Movement Against Street Hoodlums (SMASH) was on the scene to investigate the shooting.

The drive to St. Bernadine Hospital is about 2.4 miles, Lavender died after arrival.

Witnesses at the apartment complex have been questioned, along with the driver of the car that had been shot at. “The driver was not injured,” said Williams, adding he did not yet know how long it took from the shooting until Lavender died.

Williams said it was the eighth homicide in San Bernardino in 2013. Last year, San Bernardino had 46 murders within its city limits.

FRESNO – Two suspects were taken into custody after they returned to the scene where they allegedly shot someone only hours earlier.

Charles Williams

The Fresno Police Department arrested 18-year-old Charles Williams and his sister, 21-year-old Shacola Muhammad, Saturday afternoon for shooting a man inside a liquor store earlier in the day.

The incident happened just before 11:30 a.m. at the Church Market, located at 4620 E. Church Ave. Officers responded to reports of a shooting victim and found a 26-year-old man with a graze wound to the head.

Police said Williams, a West Fresno gang member, and the shooting victim were inside the liquor store when they began to argue because they belonged to rival gangs. Williams’ sister was with him during the argument.

Shacola Muhammad

The men took their fight outside the store at which time Williams pulled a handgun out of his backpack and began firing at the victim. One of the rounds hit the man in the head, authorities said.

Williams and Muhammad fled the scene in a GMC Yukon SUV. However, only a few hours later, around 3:30 p.m., the two returned to the store to purchase cigarettes. A detective was inside the liquor store investigating the shooting, recognized the brother and sister, and took them into custody.

The Yukon the pair had fled in was parked outside. Detectives found a loaded handgun in the suspect’s backpack inside the vehicle.

Williams was booked into the Fresno County Jail for the shooting and for possession of a gun. Muhammad was booked into the jail as being an accessory to the crime.

DUI Driver Causes Trouble on Eureka Streets

Tanner Nutt, 24

Citizens of Eureka had a good reason for concern when they saw a 2008 Toyota 4Runner driving on the wrong side of the road, hitting a sign pole, and threatening the safety of others on Monday morning. Witnesses suspected the driver of the vehicle might be under the influence of drugs or experiencing a medical issue. Numerous calls were made to the police department.

While some citizens were calling the police, others tried to get the driver to stop, but their attempts were unsuccessful. By the time the officers arrived, the Toyota was driving very slowly and an officer stopped his car and activated his emergency lights several yards in front of the dangerous vehicle. This did not stop the driver, later identified as Tanner Nutt, 22, of Arcata, who continued driving until he hit the patrol car.

After the vehicle was stopped, the officers tried contacting Nutt, who locked himself in the car and refused to get out. For the sake of safety, the officers broke the driver’s side window and opened the door. They were finally able to remove Nutt, who was very aggressive, from his vehicle and detained him after he was placed on the ground. The officers concluded that Nutt was under the influence of heroin and other medication and he was taken to the hospital for treatment for the minor injuries he received from the broken glass before being booked into the Humboldt County Jail.

Citizens are constantly encouraged to notify the police of suspicious activities on the roads

Further investigation and witness reports revealed that Nutt has been speeding northbound on Broadway in the center turn lane before he veered into the southbound lanes and onto the north sidewalk colliding with a sign post. After hitting the post, Nutt continued driving on the wrong side of the road and sideswiped a vehicle after failing to stop at the red light at Wabash. This still did not stop Nutt, who still continued driving and almost hit two pedestrians who had to jump out of the way as he drove up the north sidewalk. Nutt finally slowed down later as he began to drive northbound on the wrong side of Broadway until he collided with the patrol car. Thankfully no one was injured.

Nutt is charged for driving under influence and hit and run and in currently held in the Humboldt County Jail. He will also be charged for possession of medications without a prescription, driving on the wrong side of the road, driving on the sidewalk, and failure to stop for a red light.

Eureka Police Department thanks the citizens who notified the police of the incident and remained at the scene to provide a statement. Anyone who has witnessed the incident or has more information is encouraged to contact Senior Traffic Officer Gary Whitmer at (707) 441-4232.

Angelo Moreno, who died Friday in an officer-involved shooting after a pursuit, pulled up a shiny metal object from his truck and “held it as if it were a firearm,” according to a statement Tuesday by Napa County Sheriff’s Office.

Moreno died of multiple gunshot wounds and he tested presumptive positive for methamphetamine and marijuana, according to preliminary autopsy results, said Napa County Sheriff’s Capt. Tracey Stuart.

Moreno, said by police to be a homeless man from the Vallejo and Martinez areas, is suspected of stealing the truck that he drove in the incident.
