Shortly after midnight, officers from the Sacramento Police Department reportedly stopped the suspects’ vehicle in the Natomas area. Officers reportedly connected them to other recent shoplifts of liquor from stores in Roseville and Sacramento, and reportedly found about $2,500 worth of hard liquor in their vehicle.

This comes at the heels of the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office formally charging 28-year-old Gulmaro Martinez with six counts of burglary, assault with a deadly weapon, and carjacking. It is alleged that Martinez on February 9th, 2014, forced his way into a residence on Waterman Court in San Jose and began to assault a family that was sleeping at the residence. Sgt. Heather Randol said, “Martinez was armed with a shotgun during the attack”. Two adults and a child were hurt in the attack.

By 3 am, Martinez reportedly carjacked a victim on Holly Drive, using the shotgun, and fled with the stolen car. He was soon identified by police who pursued him in the vehicle.

During the brief car chase Randol said, “Officers blocked Martinez’ path of escape, and Martinez, still armed with the shotgun, rammed a marked patrol car, injuring the officer inside”.  Officer Monzon #4147 discharged his service weapon at Martinez, striking him twice.  Martinez was unable to drive, but during the attempt to arrest him, he continued to struggle with officers. With several non-life threatening injuries, the suspect was transported to a local hospital, were he was later taken to the Main County Jail and booked on the charges Feb 13.

Stow Attackers Reach Plea Deal

LOS ANGELES – Two men accused of attacking a baseball fan outside Dodger Stadium in March 2011 reached a plea deal on Thursday.

San Bernardino County residents Marvin Eugene Norwood, 33, and Louis Alex Sanchez, 32, both from Rialto, admitted to attacking Bryan Stow, 45, outside of Dodger Stadium following the 2011 season-opening game against the visiting San Francisco Giants.

Stow, who was with friends, had driven from the Bay Area for the game. While walking through the parking lot after the game, he was viciously attacked by Norwood and Sanchez. Sanchez, who was considered the instigator in the attack, was sentenced to eight years by a Los Angeles Superior Court judge. Norwood, who will be released soon due to time already served, was sentenced to four years. The case received massive amounts of publicity.

Police initially arrested another man for the crime, but when his innocence was quickly proven, the search continued for the men eventually arrested during a police raid in their neighborhood about two months after the March 31 beating.

Evidence in the case showed that Sanchez had been harassing Giants fans during the game, which included throwing sunflower seeds, peanuts and soda at fans while trying to instigate fights. While Norwood tried to stop earlier incidents, reports said he joined in the attack on Stow after the game. Witnesses told investigators that Stow was hit from behind, knocked the ground and kicked while he was lying defenseless.

They escaped when Sanchez’s sister drove by and picked them up. Investigators were able to determine their identities by linking them to the section they were sitting inside the stadium, piecing together those who had purchased tickets, and eventually locating them in Rialto.

Authorities said both men are facing federal prison time if convicted on charges of possessing illegal weapons. When the police conducted the raids on their homes, they discovered the weapons. Having previously been convicted of a crime, they were not allowed to possess the guns.

If Stow eventually dies due to his injuries, which are considered life-long, prosecutors will be allowed to file murder charges against both Norwood and Sanchez. Stow, who is married with children, suffered severe brain damage as a result of the attacks.

In a televised portion of the sentencing hearing, Judge George Lomeli said, “I don’t normally comment, but this is the kind of case that demands it; that screams out for comment. You not only ruined the life of Mr. Stow, but of his children, his spouse, his family and friends. You are the biggest nightmare for individuals who attend public events like sporting events and concerts.”

If the case had reached trial, Sanchez faced a maximum sentence of 11 years in prison while Norwood was looking at an eight-year sentence.

Deputies Track Down Rancho Cucamonga Shooting Suspect

RANCHO CUCAMONGA – A few hours after a 45-year-old security guard was shot to death, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputies tracked down the suspect and arrested the man they believe pulled the trigger. Diego Dominguez, 36, of Rancho Cucamonga was arrested after deputies stopped the vehicle he was driving when he was leaving his home early Sunday morning.

Hours before, in an attempt to rob The Brother’s Liquor Store at Arrow Highway and Hermosa Ave., investigators said that Dominguez shot Dean Vedol Sena, a security guard hired to watch the stores. Reports stated that Dominguez entered the store at about 11:20 p.m. at which two clerks were on duty.

“(Dominguez) brandished a dark-colored handgun,” said Corporal Randy Naquin, a San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputy. “One of the clerks was able to leave the minimart. The other clerk was behind the counter.”

While Dominguez demanded cash from the register, said Naquin, the remaining clerk complied with his requests. Meanwhile the other clerk had notified Sena, the security guard who worked in the area. Sena, who was armed, entered the store and was shot multiple times by Dominguez, said homicide investigators, who then fled on foot. Naquin said Sena was not able to get his weapon out of his holster to return fire. Sena died at San Antonio Community Hospital in Upland.

Deputies were able to view store videotape and identify a possible suspect, eventually tracking Dominguez to a local address. He had entered the store wearing a hoodie, a bandana covering his face and had eyeglasses on.

Once deputies stopped Dominguez’s vehicle near his residence at the 9900 block of Placer St. at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, deputies served search warrants for his car and residence. Dominguez is being held at West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga.

Traffic Stop in Dixon Nets Suspect In $40,000 Winters Burglary

$

A routine traffic stop at Porter Road and Marvin Way in downtown Dixon led to the February 20 arrest of a Rancho Cordova man on suspicion of several felonies.

A Dixon police officer initiated the stop for expired registration tags on the suspect’s vehicle’s rear license plate. According to Dixon Police Sergeant Brad Harms, this is a common offense committed by criminals seeking to avoid paying the DMV fee. But a police officer can ascertain within seconds via his or her onboard computer if the tag’s number matches registration on file at the DMV. Compared to paying the small DMV fee, getting arrested for a misdemeanor is not worth it, Harms said.

While conversing with the driver, Ryan Chase Micklon, 23, the Dixon PD officer noticed items in Mickon’s vehicle appeared to match the stolen property described in a Winters Police burglary investigation alert recently disseminated to local police departments. Included in the report and Micklon’s car were expensive power tools, according to Sgt. Harms. While the investigation continues, Winters PD estimates the total value of all the stolen property in the case will exceed $40,000.

Dixon PD informed the Winters PD investigators of the vehicle stop. Winters PD notified the victim, who traveled to Dixon, looked in Micklon’s vehicle and confirmed the power tools and other property were his. Investigators are looking to connect Mickon with several other thefts recently reported in Winters.

Meanwhile, Dixon PD transported Micklon to the Solano County Jail, where he was incarcerated on felony charges including possession of methamphetamine and stolen goods in addition to the fraudulent license tag misdemeanor. Micklon’s previous and recent run-ins with the law include an arrest in September of 2013 for his involvement in an identity theft operation in Roseville, and in December in San Mateo on similar charges.

Traffic Stop Anything but ‘Routine’

LONG BEACH – It is known as a “routine traffic stop.”  Law enforcement conduct numerous such stops and subsequently send the driver off uneventfully.  However, every once in a while what begins as a routine traffic stop ends in an arrest, or more.

Such was the case recently on the 6900 block of Atlantic Avenue when police stopped a driver for a traffic violation.  The “nervous” driver did not have a drivers license.  The vehicle held packaging material that led authorities to investigate the suspect’s home.

SACRAMENTO—Two people were arrested on Tuesday, February 18, following a search by Sacramento County probation officers that resulted in a gun and large amounts of drugs recovered. Four children were also found in the home and taken into protective custody.

According to a probation department press release, Jonathon Synclair Britt, 29, and Angelica Monica Torro, 28, were arrested after officers visited Britt’s Sacramento home for the search.

Officers found more than two pounds of methamphetamine with an estimated street value of $19,000, and seven grams of heroin with an estimated street value of $700. Officers also recovered a loaded handgun and more than $28,000 in cash.

Probation officials said the arrests were notable because of the presence of the children as well as the substantial amounts of narcotics and cash.

Britt was on post-release community supervision, a part of California’s prison realignment program that requires county probation department officers, rather than parole officers, to supervise some offenders released from prison.

According to Main Jail booking records, Britt and Torro both were booked on one charge each of possession of narcotics for sale, possession of non-narcotic controlled substances for sale, and child endangerment. Britt also was booked on a charge of possession of a firearm by a felon, records show. They both are being held without the possibility of bail due to the seriousness of the crime.

LAKEPORT – LAKE COUNTY – A traffic stop on a residential street just a few blocks from the shore of Clear Lake resulted in the arrest of a Lakeport man on multiple drug and weapons charges.

Sunday night, at 9:36 pm, a Lakeport Police officer initiated a traffic stop on the 1200 block of Hartley Road. According to a Lakeport Police press report, the officer soon found when contacting the driver, 39-year-old Eduardo Nunez Lopez, that his license was suspended. Another patrol officer arrived, and discovered that there was a wooden object with a lanyard attached tucked into the passenger seat by the door. He removed it as a potential weapon, and discovered that it was a Billy club, which is considered a dangerous weapon and illegal to possess.

Lopez shouted out to someone in a home along Hartley.

Lopez shouted out to someone in a home along Hartley.

The officers had Lopez step out of the car while they detained him for further investigation. He began to resist, and for reasons still not clear, yelled toward a home further down Hartley. Lopez himself resides in the further south town of Lower Lake, so perhaps a friend or customer was in a nearby house, and he was trying to warn them. What kind of customer soon became clear, as officers, after getting his consent, began a search of Lopez’ vehicle. The first thing they found was a crystal substance believed to be methamphetamine scattered about the front seat and floor, as if spilled when he was startled. 5.8 pounds of Processed marijuana in bags was found in multiple places in his car, along with a mason jar full of 415 grams of concentrated cannabis (which may take the form of hashish, honey oil, or wax).

Inspecting the crops? (Facebook)

Inspecting the crops? (Facebook)

In addition to the Billy club, Lopez was also armed with a switchblade knife stored in the console, and had a police scanner, apparently unused, stored in a bag. And he didn’t spill of of his meth in the car; he still had a bit in his pants pocket. He was arrested for possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana for sale, possession of a dangerous weapon and switchblade knife, and for destroying or concealing evidence (or perhaps just being clumsy with it.) He was booked in the Hill Road correctional facility on $15,000 bail, with his first court appearance scheduled for tomorrow.

The Solano County Jail inmate who made a break for freedom and assaulted three deputies with a fire extinguisher on February 10 finally finished his journey to the courthouse in downtown Fairfield ten days later.

On the morning of the 10th, Joseph Michael Schabert, 24, of Vacaville, was being escorted through a tunnel from the Jail to the Solano County Courthouse. Suddenly, Schabert ran. He did not get far. After breaking free of the deputy escorting him, he ran into a dead end, a room off a hallway connected to the tunnel. The door locked automatically behind him.

Three deputies opened the door and attempted to take Schabert back into custody. He ripped the fire extinguisher from the wall and sprayed the deputies in the eyes. Half-blinded, one of the deputies Tasered Schabert and immobilized him. As these events transpired, the Solano County Courthouse was evacuated.

Solano County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Deputy Daryl Snedeker stated that Schabert was handcuffed, had chains wrapped around his waist, and his arms were strapped to his sides when he ran.

Schabert had been in custody since he was arrested February 9 on suspicion of probation violation and failure to appear for a felony drug case. Now the would-be escapee faces more felony charges, including attempted escape, assault with a deadly weapon and battery on a peace officer. After a brief courtroom appearance where a probable cause hearing was set for March 17, Schabert was returned to his Solano County Jail cell without incident.

Snedeker said courthouse inmate-transfer procedures will be reviewed.

VISALIA – A 56-year-old man allegedly attempted to kidnap a 16-year-old boy in Visalia by asking him to come to his truck and then trying to grab his arm, and approached another boy in a similar incident the week before.

Police arrested Danny Ray January, of Dinuba, on Friday in connection to at least one attempted kidnapping and indecent exposure incident.

On Feb. 19, a 16-year-old boy was in the area of St. John’s Parkway and Lovers Lane when a man in a silver Nissan truck approached him. The man blocked the boy’s path with the truck and tried to get him to come over to him. When the teen resisted, the man got out of the truck and tried to grab the boy’s arm. The boy was able to get away and called the police.

An officer looking into the case found a very similar call to police earlier in the month. A man notified police that his nephew had been contacted by a completely naked man in a silver pick-up. The next day, the same truck showed up in the same area and the uncle was able to get the license plate.

Deputies pulled January over in the truck last Friday and he was arrested without incident. Both the boys identified him in a lineup.

FRESNO – The man shot and killed by a Fresno police officer on Sunday evening has been identified as 18-year-old Joseph Ma by the Fresno Coroner’s Office.

The incident happened near Lorena and Bardell avenues on Sunday around 5:30 p.m. Two officers with the Fresno Police Department’s Violent Crime Impact Team pulled over a red BMW for making an illegal U-turn and for having no license plate. The two passengers inside, one of whom was armed, jumped out and ran from the car.

The officers saw that the man was carrying “what appeared to be a silver semi-automatic handgun,” Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer said. One of the officers chased the armed suspect, now identified as Ma, through Bigby Villa Apartments and then fired at the suspect.

“We do not have details in terms of what prompted the officer to fire the weapon or what led up to the shooting,” Dyer said. Ma died from his wounds.

Police recovered the suspect’s gun at the scene. They say it was loaded, but have not yet determined whether it had been fired. Officers also found drugs on Ma, and drugs and cash on the road near the passenger side of the car. Police believe these items fell out when Ma ran away from the car.

Police also arrested the driver of the car, 20-year-old Jose Cardenas, on various drug charges. The third suspect – the other passenger that ran away – has not yet been located.

The officer who killed Ma has not been identified, but Dyer said he is a veteran cop assigned to patrol south Fresno.
